Days to solstice calculation
Hello,
I've come across a problem in developing a set of custom functions to calculate the number of hours of daylight at a given latitude, and the number of days a date precedes or secedes the summer solstice. I discovered an inconsistency concerning leap years between my derived values and those from the US naval databases. It seems as far as I can figure that my inconsistency arises either in the calculation I used derived from an ecological modeling study in the 90's, in my understanding of the w...

CodeWeavers 30% off Winter Solstice Sales on CrossOver Mac a
While the big box stores and shopping malls run black Friday sales, and in recent years many of the online retailers have began to have black Monday sales. Leave it up to the wacky folks at Codeweavers to have a 30% off Winter Solstice Sales on CrossOver Mac and Linux.
Why a Winter Solstice sale you might ask, well you see CodeWeavers has their headquarters in Minneapolis St. Paul Minnesota and in Minnesota in the winter you measure snow by the feet and temperatures to the negative. So when the Solstice comes on December 21st, t...

Solstice Reborn, it works! (almost)
I installed Solstice reborn on my Linux Mint LXDE. I already have .net framework 2.0 and mono installed as well as directx 9.0.
I overwrote mscore in wine libraries also.
Now when I start the game it opens and there is an error message. I minimize it and a terminal like screen appears chronicling the loading pro...

R Reference Card and other help (especially useful for Newbies)
Hi all:
Happy summer solstice to all northern hemispherics (and winter solstice to
the southerners).
Newbies (and others!) may find useful the R Reference Card made available by
Tom Short and Rpad at http://www.rpad.org/Rpad/Rpad-refcard.pdf or through
the "Contributed" link on CRAN (where some other reference card...

Out of Connections, possibly solved FYI
...rossed*
Lets hope this has finally fixed the resource
problems on Titan.
-------------------------------------
Just rebooted Titan to fix the hopefully last remaining
problems with samba on it. Once the system came back up
it turned out to have a problem running the backup
software. Starting the Solstice client made it coredump.
A truss on it showed me a problem with open file descriptors
(obvious problem since I just boosted this level in the
/etc/system file). I tried lowering it but keeping it
high enough for samba - did not work. Ended up setting
the values in the /etc/system file back to the d...

v1.1.rc13 released

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.1/rc/dovecot-1.1.rc13.tar.gz.sig
There's always time for one more release candidate. :) I was planning on
releasing v1.1.0 a couple of minutes before summer solstice (23:59 UTC
according to Wikipedia). Maybe it'll bring luck to the release. :)
- mbox: Fixed a crash when adding a new X-IMAPbase: header with
keywords.
- Message parser: Fixed assert-crash if cached MIME structure was
broken.
- Squat: Potential crashfix with mmap_disable=yes.

Lots of ERRbadfile and Expected SMBtrans2 responses with smbclient
...ERRDOS - ERRbadfile listing \GRE\texts-secure\d.txtt\*
Is there a fix for this? My amanda logs that get e-mailed to me are 1.2
megabytes in size and filled with this kind of garbage. I don't think
it's even backing up those files.
As an aside, our older backup solution which is Sun's Solstice Backup
v5.1 and Legato Networker (running on the windows clients) comaplains
about the very same files with an "Unknown NT backup type 0x7" error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The machine in question is running Windows 2000 Pro.

Easy way of sharing sub-directories?
We are gradually migrating our users away from Sun Solstice NFS client over
to using Samba on the Solaris servers. The PCs that the users use run
Windows NT.
We've hit a snag. Some of the directories that we are sharing out need to
have the drive letters mapped to sub-directories of the share. This seems to
be possible with Windows 2000 and Windows XP,...

Failure to rename files that have active file handles
We have just installed Samba 1.9.18p10 on an Ultra Sparc, Solaris 2.5.1 .
So far we have been very impressed with the resilience and performance
of Samba in contrast to Hummingbird and Solstice NFS products while
doing large product builds on our NT4.0 sp4 machines.
However we have come across one little problem, which may be down to
configuration, that has left us "worried" about ditching our NFS solution
completely. That is we seem to be unable to rename a file that has an

100GB incremental backups
...and thus far there are about 400GB of client's files on the server.
Basically every Microsoft Windows user generated file (Word, Excel, whatever) of the entire University gets stored on my Samba server.
Obviously backups are important. The Samba server is a Sunfire 280R and we use Sun's Solstice Backup (rebadged Legato Networker) and a Storagetek Timberwolf DLT tape jukebox to do backups every night. A full backup on Sat. nights and an incremental the other 6.
Ok, now to the problem/question - lately we've been getting a lot of Huge incremental backups. I spent a great deal of my ti...

Converting coordinates to actual distances
Hello,
I've been searching for a method of converting Lat/Lon decimal
coordinates into actual distances between points, and taking into
account the curvature of the earth. Is there such a package in R? I've
looked at the GeoR package, but this does not seem to contain what I am
looking for. Ideally the output would be a triangular matrix of
distances.
Thanks in advance,
Paul Brewin

[OT] Canada on Rails by ferry?
Hey y''all,
Are any folks planning on taking the ferry from Seattle to Vancouver
(via Victoria)? I''ve never done it before so I have no idea how much
of an adventure it is. Flights are a $100+ less to Seattle than
Vancouver so the price works out the same or a bit less. My plan is
to fly to Seattle (from Savannah, GA) on Tuesday to catch the early
ferry on Wednesday
