Any way to reduce CPU use of OpenSSH?
On my CentOS v5.2 server (dual Pentium4) the OpenSSH daemon stands out as being the most CPU-intensive of the applications running, It's used 176 minutes of CPU time in the last 2 days alone. Is there any way to lower the CPU utilization without compromising security? (I.e. without using a less processor-intensive encrypt/decrypt algorithm?) I'm getting the CPU use figures from

Another Fedora decision
...into discussion what is good for security and how it affects that. That would be what I would recommend to myself (which I did way back...). If I were choosing the book to get good start today, I would choose: UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook (4th Edition) 2010 by Evi Nemeth and Garth Snyder - don't worry about "outdated...", remember, you first need fundamentals. It is not as "fundamental" as some of the books of the past I remember, but I'd rather mention it that those really old books. I'm sure, someone may suggest better book, maybe even free onlin...

ie-specific error in prototype try-catch block?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for debugging ie- specific errors? I have been working on a porting a prototype application that works fine in firefox to ie, and have run into several problems. For the latest one, the error message is not very informative. When trying to load the application, ie complains "Object doesn''t support this property or method." When

How to disable hal's polling of CD-ROM drive in CentOS 5.1?
Given that I hardly ever use the CD-ROM drive, it makes no sense to have hal constantly polling it for new media. How can I disable this polling in CentOS 5.1? Thanks.

Pointer to simple mail server setup?
Hello. I need to set up a mail server for a small (~5 people) organization on CentOS 5.1. While I am very familiar with CentOS and Linux in general, I have zero experience in setting up a POP3(s)/SMTP mail server. I suppose eventually I'd like to do spam/virus filtering, but initially the simple sending/receiving of mail will be adequate. Can someone point me to a tutorial

What is $super
Greetings, I had a question about the $super argument that I wasn''t able to find in documentation, searching etc. What exactly is the $super argument. Is it a reference to the super class''s prototype function? Or is it an instantiated object of the super class that is passed to the subclass''s method? I am completely confuzzled on this one, my typical

How do point releases work?
I'm new to RHEL-like distros. When, say, CentOS 4.1 is released, will it simply be CentOS 4.0 + released updates in new ISO images? Or is it more than just the updated packages integrated into the full distribution? Put another way, if my 4.0 installation is kept up to date with YUM, will I basically have a 4.1 installation? Thanks.

Where's v5.3 source RPMs?
It seems that the mirrors are now all sync'd with the binary RPMs, but where are the source packages? The source RPMs are available for the few packages updated since the upstream 5.3 release, but the SRPMS for the release itself are missing. Example: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-5/5.3/os/ has directories containing the x86 and x86_64 binaries, but should also

string.prototype.isNumeric
Hey all, Just had a need for this, wondering if it is a candidate for inclusion as it is only a single line and I can''t seem to spot any other way of acheiving the same functionality in less code. String.prototype.isNumeric = function() { return (this.match(/^\d+$/) != null); } I used it in the context of: Event.observe(el,''keypress'',function (e) { if

How to disable audio in CentOS7?
How can I completely disable audio drivers and services in my CentOS7 system? This system is a server that will never run any audio applications. The problem is, I can't disable the audio device in my BIOS, so the system finds it in the PCI device list and configures it on each boot. Yes, I know I can blacklist specific device driver modules, but I've got a minimum of 11
