cachefile for snail zpool import mystery?
Hi, We are seeing more long delays in zpool import, say, 4~5 or even 25~30 minutes, especially when backup jobs are going on in the FC SAN the LUNs resides (no iSCSI LUNs yet). On the same node for the LUNs of the same array, some pools takes a few seconds, but minutes for some. the pattern seems random to me so far. It''s first noticed soon after being upgraded to Solaris 10 U6

ssh-agent: How to use it properly?
Hello list, Again not sure if this is a right place to ask. I read the "Snail book" (SSH, The secure shell. The definitive guide. 1st ed.) and try to figure out whether I need a copy of the ssh-agent running on a host through which I try connect further. The Snail book recommends running the ssh-agent on the remote host always if the TTY is allocated (i.e. I not ju...

how to overlap plots
Dear R experts: Can you help me to overlap a histogram and theoretical density curve of poison distribution? for example data like this: The numbers of sanils found in each of 100 sampling quadrats in an area were as follows: number of snails, r 0 1 2 3 4 5 8 15 f=frequency of r 69 18 7 2 1 1 1 1 apparently this is not Poison but near to Poison, How to overlap the theoretical desity curve to the histgram of this data? Thanks in advance! Josh

gamma distribution don't allow negative value in GLMs?
Dear friends, when i use glm() to fit my data, i use glm(formula = snail ~ vegtype + mhveg + humidity + elevation + soiltem, *family = Gamma(link = inverse),* data =a,)) It shows: error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : *gamma distribution don't allow negative value*. But i use result<-glm(formula = snail ~ vegtype + mhveg + humidity + elevation + soiltem, family...

which model (GLMs)is the best?
Dear friends, I used R to analyze my data with the models of generalized linear models, and found three models were relatively good, but i can't decide which is the best,how should i do ? *Model1:* glm(formula = snail ~ grass + gheight + humidity + altitude + soiltem + airtem + grass:altitude, *family = Gamma(link = inverse*), data = model, na.action = na.exclude, control = list(epsilon = 1e-04, maxit = 50, trace = T)) (Dispersion parameter for Gamma family taken to be 0.2644025) Null deviance: 6...

New addition to FAQ
Greetings, I was on IRC about 7 hours ago and suggested that the FAQ be updated slightly. Rather than sit on my ass and complain I figured I'd ask a few people, and see if the idea was worth the time. Here's what Ive started with: http://www.dimension.net.nz/theora.html I'll be adding to it over the next 24 hours - mostly in the area of Playback and Encoding. Just threw it together

New home for S Poetry
Many readers on this list probably don't know that S Poetry had an old home. S Poetry is a book in pdf about programming in the S language. It was written mainly with S-PLUS 3.x in mind when R was still an infant relative to what it is now. Some parts of the book are still quite accurate for R. In other places R is rather different from what is in the book. The FAQ on the differences

degraded performance under domain login load
...l! As a test i swapped in the gentoo box and forced the upgrade to samba 3.0.21b (incase it was distro related) and to my surprise the same problem occurred, a class will come into the computer lab all try to login, kixtart will start do its login procedures and everything would login at a snail pace, to the point kixtart will lockup and generate errors!!! As the next test, i swaped the fresh installed freebsd system back in removed the latest samba from ports and manually installed samba 3.0.14 and the problem was resolved. This leads me to believe that this is not distro specifi...

Dialing time-out
...quot;. Now this is ok, of sorts. The fault in this is when you dial a valid number you are stuck waiting 3 seconds for the system to out pulse and connect. This clearly separates Asterisk from the traditional TDM platform behavior where a time out can be REAL LONG allowed people to dial at a snail's rate without upsetting the phone system but then immediately out pulsing when a number match is met, regardless if the number match is a 4 digit extension or 7 digit phone number. Is this one of the reasons and purposes Asterisk has a "real-time" option? Thanks, Jim

Performance Issues
...RED HAT Support involved. And the fact that Rocks is a modification to an unsupported OS.... I have tried using various block size in tar from 256 to 8192 - with minimal success. Does anybody have any experience on setting the OS/Kernel parameters to utilize the hardware at something more then a snails pace? Or Suggestions on what I could test and/or try? Or Is there a standard disk / tape IO test package that could test the speed/performance of the disks and /or tapes? Thanks for your help Dan A. Dansereau

Transforming sequence data into numeric values.
Hi I am analysing from a behavioural experiment comparing left and right turns of snails. Basically I end up with a list of twenty values like this: R R R L R L L L L R R R R L L L R L R L I want to analyse runs of turns but would like to automate how this is processed and end up with a table that displays the frequency of the sequences (L, LL, LLL, R, RR, RRR etc). Is it possible...

Ruby on Snails
I''ve been reading, hearing, and looking at blogs that state Ruby on Rails is rather slow. Coming from a VB 6 world (thank you Microsoft for killing VB because VB.NET is NOT VB) I was always told that VB was a toy or too slow. Now, I''ll easily tell you that yes VB was not a great language. It had it''s share of warts, like a lot of other languages I might add, but
