reason to switch to 1.1
We've been running 1.1 on about half of our servers for about a week now.
Ive mailed before that I was pleasantly surprised by its better use of
resources. Here's a graph showing that fact. Server load in the last 10
days.

he said 'server rack'. thats a probably 6' tall cabinet filled with
servers, each of which has likely dozens of high speed fans.
(back of 2 server cabinets I used to run at work...)

a cabinet like that needs 600 cubic feet/minute or more airflow.
now, I'm guessing that H's rack...

Noise Cancellation of Server Noise
Has anyone come across a device that could cancel out the noise from servers, ie. the fan noise? I have a server rack near my office and would like to see if i can decrease the noise level. It would seem to me that the steady drone of the fans could be cancelled out to a large extent.

in a rack server with arrays of fans in hotswap sliders inside the
server that plug directly into the power distribution board?

pray tell how thats 'very easy' ? that particular server has 14
internal fans (there's another row of 7 beneath the ones visible)

ZFS in front of MD3000i
...eate a whole bunch of RAID0 1-disk LUNs and expose those. Great..
except that the MD3000i only lets you create 16 LUNs and we have 44
disks total. :)
Anyone tried this? I guess our best bet will be to just do all the
RAID stuff on the MD3000i and export one LUN to ZFS.

ZFS+ config for 8 drives, mostly reads
Hi,
I posted in the Solaris install forum as well about the fileserver I''m building for media files but wanted to ask more specific questions about zfs here. The setup is 8x500GB SATAII drives to start and down the road another 4x750 SATAII drives, the machine will mostly be doing reads and streaming data over GigaE.
-I''m under the impression that ZFS+(ZFS2) is similar to

SSD drives for the OS - 1 or 2?
Preparing to build a small replacement server (initially built in 2005)
and normally for the OS I would buy 2x500GB drives and deploy in a RAID
1 configuration.
Now we have SSD drives available
- does just a single SSD drive offer the same reliability or is there
advantage in deploying two in a Raid 1 config?
Also, what form factor / interface is best for the SSD OS boot device on
a server

compression at zfs filesystem creation
Hi,
I just installed 2009.06 and found that compression isn''t enabled by default when filesystems are created. Does is make sense to have an RFE open for this? (I''ll open one tonight if need be.) We keep telling people to turn on compression. Are there any situations where turning on compression doesn''t make sense, like rpool/swap? what about rpool/dump?
Thanks,

zpool command hangs, how to recover?
I have a 12 disk ZFS+ volume and this morning tried to look at some data on it and the ''ls'' command just hung. So I ran a ''zpool status'' which also proceeded to hang and return no data. I had to leave for work and when I came home the computer had shut down, which is weird. So I started the machine back up and I was able to run a zpool status, it returned

Puppet apply hangs on Executing '/etc/init.d/ntp status'
Hi, after a machine has been up for a few days the following command hangs
when running `puppet apply` (--debug added to see what was hanging)
Service[ntpd](provider=debian): Executing ''/etc/init.d/ntp status''
Running `/etc/init.d/ntp status` works fine when run as root or as myself.
Is there any way to figure out what puppet is hanging on? Is it hanging on
its next action
