smpasswd and ldap ...
Another question ...
When using the LDAP SAM, should smpasswd change the POSIX
password?
The reason I ask, is because when I do a change or add with
smbpasswd, I see that the POSIX password does not change,
but I throught that it should ... is there something wrong
with my installation ... another reason I ask, is because I
keep having little problems...

smpasswd
Hi,
I have just installed samba-3.0.22 and copied my smb.conf across from my
previous version on the same machine. With my previous version I never
had to run smbpasswd -a username. It would do the authentication from
/etc/passwd. ie when I added someone as a user with useradd they would
automatically be able to mount samab shares. I am now having to add all
my users with smbpasswd.

Issue providing seamless migrtion (3.0.24 to 3.5.6) - sambaNTPassword mystery

sambaNTPassword here !
2. I want to manually provide sambaNTPassword. Here, no samba command
(pdbedit, smpasswd) provides me a way to do it, the only way I found is
to adding it directly into LDAP (ldapadd or mod,...) [3].
As we could pedict, it doesn't work (log as root). Since
"sambaNTPassword" comes during the manual join procedure, it must be

Problem adding users with smbpasswd
Hi!
I've a working samba PDC with a ldap backend configured. I've tried to
add some users to samba with smbpasswd -a command but I encountered a
little problem.
I've made a script that reads a file with user and password info and
executes the following line:
smpasswd -a $user $pass
The problem that I encountered was that I had this information on two
files. The first one I added without any problems but the second it
started to say this:
smbpasswd -a $user $pass
ldapsam_add_sam_account: SID
'S-1-5-21-3317586490-762025270-1437560638-12520' already...

passdb/secrets.c: (43)
failed to open /usr/lib/samba/private/secrets.tdb
passdb/machine_sid.c: (163)

I've recently created a new server (new P4) and installed samba.

I've re-installed samba from scratch.
I've copied over the old smb.conf and smbpasswd file,
copied over /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow files too.
(old server (P III) was the same, Debian sarge with 3.0.10)
With the new server, the xp machines I have, won't login

SUMMARY: Samba "unable to validate password" error
...to the file
passwd program = /bin/passwd
passwd chat = *new*password* %n\n *new*password* %n\n *changed*
passwd chat debug = No
look at the file for the user velazque
if the user is not in the file you can add him with the command in the ./bin
-directory of your samba:
./smpasswd -a velazque
enter the password for him.
That must help in your situation, if there are any more question, please
come back.

HELP: XP cannot login to Samba 2.2.5
...sticking out is that group nobody is
showing up, but the user I am logging in as is a
member of the admin group. Any ideas are appreciated,
TIA.
I've added the user and the machine account to the
system, also tried it via the adduser script. The
accounts are in /etc/passwd and
/opt/sfw/private/smpasswd.
One other bit of info, I have a lmhosts file on the XP
client because the Samba server is on another subnet,
however if I login locally to the laptop, I can see
the server just fine and access shares on it without
trouble.

Using SAMBA 2.2.1a on both a HP/UX and Solaris UNIX servers. I am wanting to use our NT domain controller to authorize access to the UNIX servers so I don't have to maintain the smpasswd file. I have security=server and encrypt passwords=yes. When I map a UNIX drive on my W98 workstation I am authorized and given access. When I attempt to map a drive from another workstation the NT PDC rejects the valid password.
Here is the samba error log:
