Mongrel under opensolars with SMF
Thought I''d drop a note about my experience with running mongrel directly under the solaris service management framework. So far I''m very impressed. SMF is the solaris replacement for the init system. It''s tied much more closely to the OS and for instance doesn''t use pid files. I''ve found you can completely eliminate mongrel cluster, and for that matter the normal monitoring system like monit. Another nice feature is th...

solaris 10 SMF setup?
Hello I'm in the process of putting SMB onto a dual Opteron x64 box running Solaris 10, with the SFW samba as supplied by Sun. I haven't found any hooks for this for the new SMF/SVC startup system, so I'm doing so now, but before I go any further, am I duplicating any efforts? Is anyone else doing this and has done it? At present I'm only starting smbd and nmbd (I never really understood what that other bit was for anyway!) Carl

Solaris SMF manifests and services in puppet
...w services? I''m not sure this would be useful for all OSes, since package management systems generally install init scripts. Well it''d still be useful for Linux if you''re managing any customized services. For Solaris, it''d be great if I could just give puppet an SMF XML file, and say "ensure!" :) When the XML manifest changes, it''d be cool to re-do the svccfg import. But puppet would probably need to keep a local version of the XML file to do this, since svcprop=>XML translation would be difficult. Just an idea. Does it make sense? -C...

SMF/process contracts in Solaris 10
...bug list for OpenSSH for this, and I'm finding nothing. I'd appreciate it if somoene could point me to an existing thread about this. (I know that other people are aware of the problem, though, so I'm a bit surprised to find nothing.) We're running OpenSSH under Solaris 10 using SMF instead of a legacy init script. SMF isn't doing the right thing WRT sshd. For example, SMF should be able to restart sshd if it's killed, but it's not currently doing so and reports the service as being online. I tracked down the problem to the fact that OpenSSH does not put child p...

ZFS automatic snapshots SMF service updated
Hi All, I just posted version 0.6 of the automatic snapshots prototype on my web log. The new features are: * ZFS send/receive support * Multiple schedules per filesystem More at: http://blogs.sun.com/timf/entry/zfs_automatic_snapshots_now_with Note, this is just something I''ve been messing about with in my free time - it''s not an official ZFS project and may not be

Solaris SMF services and their dependencies...
...package installs fail because they can''t see the files. 5 seconds later the automounter comes online and the files are available... Basically the problem here is that the command used to restart the service doesn''t wait for the service to actually restart - it just triggers the SMF services to restart it. I can''t see any options in svcadm to restart and wait for it to be online again - which is a little annoying. And I think Puppet makes the assumption that because it told the service to restart that it has actually done that... If I take the requirement for autofs...

2007/128 SMF services for Xen
I am sponsoring this fasttrack for John Levon. It is set to expire on 3/14/2007. Note that this is an externally visible case. liane --- SMF services for Xen 1. Introduction This case introduces the SMF services used by a Solaris-based domain 0 when running on Xen, or a Xen-compatible hypervisor. All of these services only run on domain 0 when booted under Xen virtualisation. A patch binding is requested. 2. Platfo...

ZFS CIFS, smb.conf (smb/server) and LDAP
All; I am deeply sorry if this topic has been rehashed, checksummed, de-duplicated and archived before. But I just need a small clarification. /etc/sfw/smb.conf is necessary only for smb/server to function properly but is smb/server SMF service necessary for ZFS sharesmb to work I am trying to setup an open solaris file server acting as a Windows PDC with SAMBA/LDAP integration on the open solaris box. (with ZFS of course...) I read a BLOG which says ZFS CIFS has nothing to do with smb/server but it seems i cannot get ZFS shar...

puppetd.pid and SMF woes
So when puppetd crashes/whatever, and a pid file is left behind, SMF in Solaris will try restarting puppet, but fail. And then it sits there restarting it forever. I''m not sure if I can adjust the flap detection in SMF.. it isn''t disabling the service for "restarting too quickly" because it takes so long to start. Probably because I'...

...deleting estub1 or vnic1, neither of which I have > ever created, that gives an error as expected). > > So is this broken, or doesn''t it work like I think it should? it''s broken. everything that you did should work. i suspect that the #dladm up-vnic in the net-physical SMF service tried to create the vnic before the etherstub. there should probably be an error in the SMF log file. i can''t explain the missing entry in #dladm show-etherstub though. -mike

zfs chattiness at boot time
Hi all, I recently started seeing zfs chattiness at boot time: "reading zfs config" and something like "mounting zfs filesystems (n/n)". Is this really necessary? I thought with SMF the times where every script announced its'' existance had gone (and good thing, too). Can''t we print something only if it goes wrong? Configuring svc:/system/xvm/domains?
I''m running Xen on Nexenta Core, and I haven''t yet figured out how to control which DomU''s are started with svcadm enable svc:/system/xvm/domains:default. virsh doesn''t seem to be available with Nexenta Core, so I''d rather edit the configuration files by hand. However, I''ve found neither OpenSolaris or Nexenta documentation on how this is

error - dovecot - child (login) killed with signal 16
We've been happily running Dovecot in Solaris 10 for about 8 months now. Yesterday, Solaris 10's SMF put it in maintenance mode (shut it down) seemingly out of the blue. The only thing going on was that I had updated the ssl certificate. We had previously been using a self signed cert. Now we have a cert from InCommon. We had a problem with a few users who are still on ancient Eudora and didn...
