Hello List, I am working with COL 2.3 and samba-2.0.5. When I /etc/rc.d/init.d samba start I get an error message in the smbd log file that says "bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use). What is causing this? What do I need to do to fix it. Charles Olds (Chaz)

Problem with stale smdb processes when users log out
I'm running Samba 3.0.0-15 (default install) on a Fedora FC1 machine. I've attached the smb.conf file below. The Samba server is acting as a WINS server on our testlab network, but is not a PDC, nor is it joined into a domain. Users authenticate by using a username/password that is local to the Samba server. The problem I'm seeing is that when a user has been connected to the

Changing SWAT user?
...ba with Webmin. I can get into Webmin and make changes to the Samba server, but I'm not able to get smbd or nmbd running. When I try to get into SWAT to make changes it keeps reverting back to my login which does not allow me to make changes. Is there a way to reset this? Also, any ideas on why smdb and smdb is not running? (go easy on me. I'm new to Linux) thanks, Carlton Whitmore

smdb warp-around after 4 GB
I run Samba 2.2.2 on any of there vendors/osversions/filesystems: o Solaris 8 / ufs o Tru64 Unix V5.0A / advfs o RedHat 7.1 / Kernel 2.4.2 / ext2fs all these are capable of handling large files (files with a 64-bit-offset larger than 4GB). At configure time, samba selects the proper compile flags (-D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE, -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64) for use with large files. The problem: When I

installing Samba as non-root user at work - please help.
...ld just kick off an smb server on my Linux box, and have my windows box map the home directory by specifying the ip address of the linux box and correct port. But perhaps such a setup, even for my simple scenario, is not possible with Samba. Speaking of ports, I specify ports of 1445 and 1139 for smdb, since I cannot use a port below 1024 without having root access. Similarly, I attempt to use higher port when I start nmdb. I try to start both the smdb and nmdb daemons, but even that doesn't appear to work correctly, as it appears that a non-root, local install is not truly supported. At...

...ow there are 50 users with win2k-boxes attached - the samba server acting as PDC. Becauce of a swap of the old server I finally decided to update to 2.2.8a. What I did (in general): - installed the new server with suse 8.2 prof - Installed the suse-rpms for 2.2.8a on the new server. - shut down smdb/nmdb on the old server and changed ip and name - copied smb.conf, smbpasswd, secrets.tdb to the new server - added all the unix users - changed ip and name on the new server to the values of the old server - started smdb/nmdb on the new server Everything seemed to work. I could logon and got my sa...

issues with Windows 7 roaming profiles
...s as a PDC with samba 3.4.9 and openldap 2.4.22. Then I joined the domain with a centOS box (samba 3.4.17) which hosts the homes and profiles. I have no problem with XP clients. I can join a windows 7 client to my domain but it is unable to load the profile when logging in. See below a level 2 log.smdb from the file server when I log in with a domain account. Is the "unable to create profs/lacoste.V2" the culprit ? What do I have to do to make it work ? Best regards, Thierry Lacoste. WINS name resolution doesn't work
...139/tcp) on the firewall should be enough to make WINS work. I did this already. I tried to connect to a share on my PDC through a VPN connection. My VPN server properly sends the address of the WINS server, that's sure, I can see the correct address in the output of "ipconfig /all". smdb and nmdb are bound to the wildcard address to accept connections from ppp interfaces created on the fly. Everything seems to work correctly, but my clients cannot use NetBIOS names, when connecting to a share. Connecting to the server by its IP address works with no problem. I am creative, so I dec...

"Secret is bad" -- Winbind with Samba 2.2.2 and Windows 2000 (native mode)
...ler (everything is native mode). I then use the "smbpasswd -j DOM" command to join my domain. Even though it says it joined, I'm not convinced it's joining correctly since I get the "Secret is bad" message. I'm running on a Rehat 7.2 box with Samba 2.2.2. Daemons smdb, nmdb, and winbindd are all running. My ultimate goal is to login to my Redhat box with Windows usernames (like DOM+username) and passwords that are authenticated from my Windows 2000 domain controllers. Hence my use of Winbind, which seems written exactly for this purpose... Help!

smbd won't start - new installation
Hi all, I installed SuSe 9.1 with Samba 3.0.4-suse. I can not get the smbd to start from swat, but nmbd is running, When I start smdb and nmbd with the SWAT restat then ps -A shows that the processes are there and it seems to run, but not according to the 'status' of swat. Copying files from samba and printing with the shared printers work though. The printers show "access denied, no connection" in the W$ print...

Stopping Samba
Hi, I have installed Samba on AIX 5.3 as per the document on http://us3.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/AIX/README. Everthing worked well and I was able to connect to the shared directory from an Windows 2003 machine. I now want to stop the smdb, nmbd processes from the command line. Although, I can start the processes from the command line (basically a script), but I do not know how to stop the processes ( apart from kill -HUP smdb etc.) as there is no file in /etc/inet directory that can be used for this purpose as I have installed...

Help with samba implementation
...Here is the scenario: 3 AIX, 6.1 lpars, dadsp001, dadsp002 and dadsp003. Installed samba 3.0.24 from aix6 cd. Currently installed on dadsp002 and dadsp003. Configured only on dadsp003. The local networks on all 3 lpars are 192.168.0 and 192.168.1 I have 2 shares configured. The daemons (smdb and nmdb) are running and users can connect to the shares on dadsp003. How do I add/configure the other 2 lpars (dadsp001 and dadsp002) so a user can login to dadsp001 or dadsp002 and have the shares available. We do not use ldap on the AIX servers. I am using smbpasswd to configure users a...
