Request SMBPASWD feature
One of the sticking points when using SaMBa is that two sets of passwords need to be maintained, one for SMB and the other for the host OS, usually a UNIX variant. A partial solution exists on some systems in the form of SMB-PAM modules. They let the UNIX like system validate passwords against the SMB password database. The problem is that, allegedly, you have to be on a WinXX box to change your

smbpasswd or tdbsam? Which one?
...es I have is, pretty randomly, I have some machines that cannot find the domain controller (dell wireless card utility tells you it cant via login). I'm guessing its because when I grep on 'corrupt' from /var/log/messages, I have many errors because of poor account managment. (exists in smbpaswd but not unix /etc/passwd. ) Thanks for the support.

nis password file -> smbpasswd?
ive got several hundred user accounts in NIS that i need to get into the smbpasswd file. since samba doesn't actually use NIS, but can only be in sync with it, what is the best way to get all these passwords into smbpaswd? I'd hate to have to have all users re-enter their passwords... anyone done this before? thanks in advance, alex --- --- Alex Lazarevich | Systems | Imaging Technology Group alazarev@itg.uiuc.edu | (217)244-1565 | www.itg.uiuc.edu -...

using passdb backend = smbpasswd and ldap linux authentication
...directory and still use the passdb backend = smbpasswd. I have an existing smbpasswd password db and an existing set of linux users I have migrated the linux users to LDAP and authenticating successfully until I have time to get all samba credentials migrated to ldap i still need use the existing smbpaswd file. so the scenario is that for existing (ie pre migration) users all is well. however for newly added users I get the following error when accessing a share. "build_sam_account: smbpasswd database is corrupt! username jtony with uid 1091 is not in unix passwd database!" smbd doesn'...

timeout after inactivity on mount.cifs
...ocol. That protocol is super old and apparently doesn't talk well to my FreeNAS Samba 3 share, so the connection was dying after a few minutes of idle. Changing the fstab to version 3.0 fixed the problem immediately: //server/share /mount/point cifs defaults,uid=username,credentials=/etc/smbpaswd,vers=3.0 0 0 It would be nice if CIFS tried to mount starting with the newest protocol (3), and if that failed it downgraded to 2, then to 1 if necessary, rather than defaulting to version 1. Time and Login restrictions
...You can more easily switch from unencrypted to encrypted passwords, as EVERY user will have its samba password sync via 'update encrypted' I can find only one reason against: 1. Troubles creating machine trust accounts
...have worked correctly. However for some reason the last machine accounts I tried to make are not working correctly. Here is what I did to create the trust accounts: useradd -g machines -d /dev/null -c "ids8" -s /bin/false ids8$ passwd -l ids8$ (it even tells me that I have success) smbpaswd -a -m ids8 "ids8" of course being the machine name. So I try to connect my machine to the domain and it give me an access denied, it basically is acting like it can not create the trust relationship between samba and the workstation and not even allowing root to log in. When I check...

Cannot change ACL from Windows Explorer
...P: "Only root can access LDAP..." On further investigation, I found out that I can do smbclient -L localhost -U root from the PDC, but I cannot do that on the slave server with error "root user not found". Based on that, I think I need to do one of these commands on the slave: smbpaswd -w or smbpasswd -a root But since this is the production server and I want to make sure first that the command works. Any suggestion? Thanks. Much appreciated.

Upgrading Samba
I have a fairly old Samba server, 3.0.25, on CentOS 4.8. I'd like to update it to something more modern, so I grabbed the "Enterprise Samba" 3.5 RPMs for RHEL, and went to work on a test machine. After upgrading via "rpm -U ./*.rpm", starting nmbd and smbd, I can no longer log in to the domain, I get: netlogon_creds_server_check failed. Rejecting auth request from client

Printer Passwords and Print Auditing
Hello to all you folks, I've got TWO questions. 1) I've been trying to password the use of my two laser printers so that printing has to be assisted by my computer attendant (we are losing too much paper and toner to people clicking print five to ten times). But, I have not figured out how to force passwords on my samba printer (HP LJ1200 running under cupsd and samba). Is it possible

2.2 release imminent.
Well, as Andrew shouted at me again this weekend it's getting to be about that time.... :-) :-). Yep, we're thinking we should do an official 2.2 Samba release early next week, so if you have anything you can't live with, now would be a good time to tell us.... :-). It's been gestating longer than an elephant, so it's really time to let it out into the world and do its own

...o promt for password, just this error... i've enabled the encrypted password and i've this problem on some Win95/98/NT client. The shock is that if i connect to server via "struments" and "connect net unit" and write \\smb1\homes i get the password request as it would be! and so why doen't work via NN? ...n2k clients. Before the upgrade there was a trust account for my win2k client. I'm assuming that the smbpasswd file is upwards compatible After the upgrade the trust didn't work anymore. I've deleted the trust account and recreated it with smbpasswd according to the documentation. (smbpaswd -am MACHINE$, joining with the wizard on the win2k side) It gave following error. Unable to joun the domain, can not find the network path. Changed back to 2.2.0a and did exactly the same It worked perfectly.
