smbmount, smbumount and smbmnt
Hi,
I am deploying samba for an embedded system. The requirement is that the
system should be able to mount windows share points. I believe "smbmount,
smbumount and smbmnt" components are needed to do the same. I am not very
clear about smbmnt though!
I find that smbmount, smbumount and smbmnt are all quite huge. Around 300
to 400Kb each.
I understand that Samba is capable of doing complex things. However if all
i need is the ability to mount and unmount share...

samba mounting files
Hi
whenever i try to mount a samba share which is a samba server i get an error
message that says "smbmnt must be installed suid root for direct
mounts(500, 500) smbmnt failed1"
On that note i tried to run "smbmount" as root but this did't work out. i also
tried to run smbmnt as root, up to now my problem was not solved.
Anybody there who can help please?

smbmnt and disabling mtab update
Hi,
I'm trying to run smbmount on a machine with the root filesystem mounted
as read only (it is a little embedded Linux PC which I want to pick up
some files from its controlling NT box).
The problem is that smbmnt doesn't appear to support the -n flag that
normal mount supports which avoids accessing /etc/mtab.
Can any one suggest any solutions to this ?
Dave

smbmount as user
...smbfs...
I want to mount a W2K share as user. Mount as root works fine.
The entry in /etc/fstab looks like this:
//NOTEBOOK/D /notebook/D: smbfs user,username=ernohl,noauto 0 3
If I try to mount:
erno@flinker:~$ mount /notebook/D:
Password:
cannot mount on /notebook/D:: Operation not permitted
smbmnt failed: 1
I'm sure the remote password is ok. But what is wrong?
Thanks in advance

smbmnt as user
Hello all,
I read in the smbmnt man page that:
"A setuid smbmnt will only allow mounts on directories owned by the
user, and that the user has write permission on."
I am trying to set up a mount on /mnt/laptop. I have given my users 777
permissions on the directory, but it is owned by root. Is there any way

problems mounting smbfs
...localhost/wwwshare /smbwww -o username=smbuser,password=xxxxxxxx
I can not mount from the command line using:
mount -t smbfs -o username=smbuser,password=xxxxxxxx //localhost/wwwshare /smbwww
The following error is returned when trying to use the 'mount' command as stated above:
execvp of smbmnt failed. Error was No such file or directory.smbmnt failed: 1
Consequently, I have not been able to auto mount in fstab using
//localhost/wwwshare /smbwww smbfs username=smbuser,password=xxxxxxxx 0 0
as a sanity check the following command is successful as well:

I found (for example) bin/testparms in the PROGS1 Makefile variable but

smbmount from fstab
I've seen several references to running smbmount from /etc/fstab, but I've
never seen an example. Does anyone have an example fstab entry that does this?
Thanks
