SMART Prefailure Attribute messages
Hello,
My machine is running Software RAID 5 on /dev/hde1, /dev/hdg1,/dev/hdi1. I
noticed on the log that suddenly we are getting messages such as :

I reckon there's a <snip> between those lines. The line right after the

or "FAILED" for that matter. If not try running

OT: SMART warning on hard drive, same warning for 2 1 /2 years
My wife's box has a very intermittent problem, when booting from the
Maxtor IDE hard drive. This has been going on for about 2 1/2
years.... The box is a Compaq EVO D300v for the Enterprise. When it
boots, there is a SMART advisory from the BIOS that says failure is
immenient. Occasionally, it will not boot, because the BIOS does not
see the hard drive. I replaced the EIDE cable, but the problem of
sometimes not seeing the hard drive on boot continues. I suspect it
has to do with something loose in the electronics...

calculating average ratings and other imponderables
Okay, this *should* be easy, but it isn''t, although I reserve the right to
smack myself upside the head if it is:
Assume that a smart has_many ratings, and a rating belongs_to a smart (the
models are fine). Each rating has a column smart_id.
Each smart, then, has many ratings, with a column called "rating" that is
an int (1-10).
I want to find, say, the ten smarts with the highest average rating.
Calculating an av...

[LLVMdev] Use of Smart Pointers in LLVM Projects
There seems to be some uncertainty about the use of smart pointers
(previously OwningPtr, now std::unique_ptr and std::shared_ptr
predominantly) in the LLVM project as a whole, so here's a thread to
discuss/clarify/etc the project preferences/direction with regard to
smart pointer usage.
For some context, see discussions in LLVM r212403 and Clang r21...

Windows 2008 R2 USBHID-UPS VendorID & Serial
Hi All,
I'm trying to configure NUT 2.6.1 on Windows 2008 R2 to recognise two APC Smart-UPS 3000 devices connected via USB cables.
I have correctly installed libusb-win32, and run the driver wizard.
In my ups.conf I have :-
[Upper]
driver = usbhid-ups
port = auto
desc = "Upper Smart-UPS 3000"
vendorid = 051d
serial = "JS1011030553&q...

The amazing smartctl -a /dev/hda
...#39;ve posted before with no success on getting this fixed.
I was getting these errors.
Dec 4 04:03:10 bikesn4x4s kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady
SeekComplete Error }
Dec 4 04:03:10 bikesn4x4s kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 {
DriveStatusError BadCRC }
And now for the amazing smartctl -a command. The output actually had a
link that advised and directed me to a link to upgrade my firmware, which
looks to have fixed it. Simply amazing.

SMART errors
...ternal hard drive was bad, and the optical drive is
going bad.
I had an old 80 GB Seagate and the optical drive was good enough to boot
the boot.iso and do a network install, so I put CentOS 5.4 on it.
It is working extremely well as a small headless server, but my Seagate
drive has given some SMART errors. This is a drive that has been out of
service for several years, I had 60GB worth of flac files on it, and had
no trouble getting them off before formatting (and all matched their
md5sum).
It appears all the errors happen at boot - IE
Error 10 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 1248 ho...

patch for old APC Smart-UPS 600
Hi there,
I am using an old (really old) APC Smart-UPS 600. It worked fine
under apcupsd but when I tried NUT it did not work.
The error I was getting was:
sudo /lib/nut/apcsmart -DDD /dev/ttyS1
Network UPS Tools (version 2.0.4) - APC Smart protocol driver
Driver version 1.99.8, command table version 2.0
debug level is '3'

Options for bridging channels in a smart bridge
Hello,
I am struggling with a problem which I thought would be an easy one :
bridging several channels together in a *smart* bridge. I emphasize
*smart* : I want my bridge to be a native_rtp one when only two channels
are involved, and switch to softmix technology when a third channel
comes in.
I thought I could use ConfBridge for that, but it creates a bridge that
is not smart (it is of type softmix even if two ch...

[PATCH]Support full capabilities on older Smart-UPS 600
Hi,
The patch below adds support for a pair of old (circa 1993) APC
Smart-UPS 600 devices that I have. They don't support the query
mechanism of newer APC devices but do respond to the full Smart-UPS
command set:
battery.alarm.threshold: 0
battery.charge: 100.0
battery.charge.restart: 00
battery.date: 02/22/93

tracing the source of a sector error from smartd
I'm not used to using smartd, but have a new set of systems
that don't have any sort of RAID on them, so I enabled

Running CentOS 5.4 64-bit ..
One of them has emailed me twice(despite it saying it
would only email me once) saying it has

+1 smart pointers here are a win in terms of safety and self-documentation.
I don't see why create* factories should be treated differently.

smartctl: is my disc dying?
...39; and it only did less than 2% in that
time. Read access became _really_ slow.
So there's definitely something amiss and I've got it offline.
There's no drama about the content as I have other backups and I'm resigned
to junking the thing, but I'm curious about the fact that smartctl doesn't
seem to report any errors. I tried a short and a long test but nothing in
there seems to be alarming - in fact it says PASSED!! - but the output is
pretty opaque and maybe I've been foxed by ambiguity. Anyone care to comment
on it?
Here it is:
