hardware requirements of asterisk
...However, when I stressed it a bit with 2 users
making calls, we started to here voice degradation and cracking noises.
However, top shows cpu is 94% idle. I am suspecting the network. However
it is 100M switch and I have not had any clue. I suppose it should at
least be able to handle 10 calls similtaneously for even a small office.
So what is the recommended spec for 5 users or 10 users?

This is ifconfig on openbsd box:
fxp0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
I think this output shows that the fxp0 interface is on simplex mode.
The voice degradation I referred was by using xlite soft phone. I open 2
line similtaneously and dial to FWD and back to my incoming extension.
Xlite is runnning on a w2k box with realtek 100M nic in auto mode. I can
bearly hear the welcome message.

Asterisk Performance
Hi Asterisk Users,
I would like to handle about 250 simultaneous (calls & agents only) calls
with PRI or a SIP trunk with the following configuration
Dell R710
Dual Intel? Xeon? X5650, 2.66Ghz, 12M Cache,Turbo, HT, 1333MHz or Single
Intel? Xeon? X5650, 2.66Ghz, 12M Cache,Turbo, HT, 1333MHz
Memory 12GB, 1333MHz
RAID 1 - 1 Tb X 2
Is that possible??
