Problem with Arima HDAMA rev.G with Integrated SiliconImage Sil3114 Serial ATA 4 Ports and 1TB SATA disks. Recomendation for a cheap SATA controller for linux software raid?
Dear Everybody, I am telling you the whole story, perhaps you can give me a better idea. Almost 3 years ago I purchased Arima HDAMA rev. G motherboard with integrated Silicon Image Sil3114 Serial ATA 4 Ports SATA I adapter. ( http://www.arimacorp.com/ViewProduct.asp?View=86 ) . BIOS version is 2.13. My intention is to make a file server, using linux software raid, so I bought 2 new shiny 1TB SATA II disks, and installed them. Unfortunately the system does not boot - hangs in the Sil...

SW-RAID on 2 SATA controllers
Hi, Would it be advisable to use SW-RAID using 2 different SATA controllers. My system happens to have both a VIA VT8237 and SIL3114 SATA controller, and I thought for both performance reason and redundancy using both for a 2 disk RAID1 array would be best. But it's possible that SW-RAID does not like or cannot overcome problems with such a setup or that one of these drivers is known to have issues. Any insight is welco...

SIL3114 and sparc solaris 10
Perhaps a bit off-topic (I asked on the rescue list -- http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/OaDWVGdLhxWVWIEabz4F -- and was told to try here), but I am kinda shooting in the dark: I have been finding online scattered and vague info stating that this card can be made to work with a sparc solaris 10 box (http://old.nabble.com/eSATA-or-firewire-in-Solaris-Sparc-system-td27150246.html is the

ZFS for my home RAID? Or Linux Software RAID?
Hello All, I build a new Storage Server to backup my data, keep archives of client files, etc I recently had a near loss of important items. So I built a 16 SATA bay enclosure (16 hot swappable + 3 internal) enclosure, 2 x 3Ware 8 port RAID cards, 8gb RAM, dual AMD Opertron. I have a 1tb boot drive and I put in 8 x 1.5tb Seagate 7200 drives. In the future I want to fill the other 8 SATA bays

SATA adapter recommendation
I have an old computer running CentOS 5. I need to add an SATA drive to it, but it doesn't have any ports, so I need an add-on card. The board only has a 32-bit PCI slot. Any recommendations on cards/brands that work well with CentOS? I don't need any raid capabilities, I just need a couple of SATA connections. Thanks, -- Bowie

Lots of overhead with ZFS - what am I doing wrong?
...ging off the same interface card). On the test machine I also have an old disk with UFS on PATA interface (Seagate 7200.7 120G). dd from raw disk gives 58MB/s and dd from file on UFS gives 45MB/s - far less relative slowdown compared to raw disk. This is just an AthlonXP 2500+ with 32bit PCI SATA sil3114 card, but nonetheless, the hardware has the bandwidth to fully saturate the hard drive, as seen by dd from the raw disk device. What is going on? Am I doing something wrong or is ZFS just not designed to be used on humble hardware? My goal is to have it go fast enough to saturate gigabit ethernet...

Growing a zpool mirror breaks on Adaptec 1205sa PCI
Setup: Osol.11 build 109 Athlon64 3400+ Aopen AK-86L mobo adeptec 1250sa Sata PCI controller card [re-posted from accidental post to osol `general'' group] I''m having trouble with an adaptec 1205sa (non-raid) SATA PCI card. It was all working fine when I plugged 2 used sata 200gb disks of a windows xp machine into it. Booted my osol server and added a zpool mirror using those

Low End NAS hardware.
Hey, The recent discussion on NAS/SAN and the Thecus N8800 got me to thinking. Bit of background. I have an old Dual Athlon MP2800+ that I'm using for a home web/file server. It runs fine but between the noise of the various fans and it's location in the living room, I've been asked by my spouse to find a replacement for it that's smaller & quieter. Looking at the Thecus, and

confusion and frustration with zpool
I have a zpool which has grown "organically". I had a 60Gb disk, I added a 120, I added a 500, I got a 750 and sliced it and mirrored the other pieces. The 60 and the 120 are internal PATA drives, the 500 and 750 are Maxtor OneTouch USB drives. The original system I created the 60+120+500 pool on was Solaris 10 update 3, patched to use ZFS sometime last fall (November I believe). In
