Slow usb/umass CompactFlash reader
...B/sec throughput. However, if I connect my Belkin CompactFlash reader instead, that's very, very slow indeed. The greatest data rate I see is about 4KB/sec, although no errors are reports. Needless to say, this works much faster under Windows :( Any suggestions gratefully received: mkn@shrewd$ sudo camcontrol inquiry da0 pass0: <OEI-USB CompactFlash 5.00> Removable Direct Access SCSI-0 device pass0: Serial Number pass0: 650KB/s transfers mkn@shrewd$ sudo usbdevs -v Controller /dev/usb0: addr 1: self powered, config 1, UHCI root hub(0x0000), Intel(0x0000), rev 1.00 port 1 addr 2:...

SysVinit guidance, please
...installing CentOS 5, both while I was working on the system. The first time, several weeks ago, I thought there was some "feature" that I had never seen before but couldn't really put my finger on it. The power came back on after a few seconds and I never missed a beat. I also shrewdly forgot about the anomaly that I had almost noticed. I had a real power failure 2 days ago and tried to be more observant. What had gotten my attention earlier is that the once-familiar banner displayed on about everything except my room's ceiling was missing. After some red herrings and...

working with CGIwithR
<headline>Short question</headline>: Do people have advice on debugging R programs running after CGIwithR inputting of data from forms? Is there a way of setting up fast local versions if your local machine has to be a windoze (2k) machine (R 2.1.0) and your server is a Debian, ssh shell only set up running R 1.8.0? Are there simple guides to ways of not having to invoke R each

Re : Generate a random bistochastic matrix
Thanks, I tried someting like this, but computation takes times for large matrices btransf <- function(y,X=length(y)^4) { N <- length(y) bm <- matrix(rep(1/N,N^2),N,N) for(j in 1:X){ coord <- sample(1:N,4,replace=T) d <- runif(1,0,min(bm[coord[1],coord[2]],bm[coord[3],coord[4]]))

...at nobody ever noticed that Yankee Doodle's "macaroni" has a very significant connection to the hidden cypher that ties together Stephen King's Language Outliers and the Adam Sandler flick Spanglish and to yet another Shakespeare play, this time the Taming of the Schrew--where the shrewd might see the same "Spanglishebrew" that I know really is the key to the Cypher--with the addition of the Periodic Table of the Elements and a few, very few initials and "groups" that give us nouns and verbs so that we can see entire sentences encoded in each and every word.
