CBC radio's science show archives Ogg
...C show that I am aware of that offers their archives in formats other than the usual real/wma/qt. For those who don't know, CBC is Canada's only national public radio and TV network. Quirks is heard weekly on Radio One (which quite litterally blankets every corner of the country) and on shortwave via Radio Canada International. db --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. Suitability of speex for use with noisy, non-voice source material?
Hello Jean-Marc, I have completed some very basic testing with unexpectedly excellent results. I am posting this to the reflector to encourage others into similar experiments. My experiment consisted of processing a 200-second long sample taken from a ham radio shortwave receiver, with a variety of signals (some strong, some weak - that is, weaker signals have more noise, and the noise is roughly speaking "white noise" vs. artifacts of other digital signal processing), and some in morse code. The test I ran is very non-scientific but was based on a decent...

MP3 decoding, fading and streaming at the same time
Hi There, I have just ported to Linux a program that I wrote years ago in Prolog under DOS to automate our Shortwave radio station. Back in 1990 the original program used ADPCM coded audio files and a special board. Now I can use MP3 files and a Soundblaster compatible card ;-) under Linux, and it runs from a console without any fancy interface. I absolutely need to fade-in and fade-out audio, and now I use t...

System Time Source
Warren, one slight correction on an other wise nicely written bit of info: The time transmitted from WWV is not Mountain Time. Even though the WWV transmitter farm is located in the Mountain time zone, the signals are transmitted as "Coordinated Universal time", UTC, or 'Zulu' time. Here, you can listen to a recording made at the transmitter site for the 5Mhz signal:

System Time
A few years ago, one of our interns was curious about system time keeping features in computer systems.? This intern was also the proud owner of an inexpensive Radio-Controlled Clock. The intern wondered why computer motherboards were not just equipped with a chip like the ones in the RCC so that their system time would always be correct. I posted a question about this on the CentOS email list

Live from Mongolia
...my early years listening to AM radio. While I was too far from Philadelphia to get a decent signal, the New York stations came in clear as a bell from my room in Northern New Jersey. From the nightly ramblings of WOR’s Jean Shepherd, I moved on to Ham Radio and as many DXers (long-distance shortwave operators) have found over the last few years, the Internet is a wonderful landscape for pushing the same communications envelope. Some guys are into cars, others are into golf or fishing, still others like to spend their free time building high-powered trebuchets to see just how far they can...
