SHN
I am interetsed to know views on how does best quality ogg compression compare with SHN or whether this is this really comparing apples with oranges because SHN does not compress that greatly? I am on a Music list that is doing a Tape Tree. I guess Grateful dead have made SHN the cult leader format. -- Raena Lea-Shannon --- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archive...

Bug with FLAC raw encoding
...ately without people then further processing dodgy wav files? Any possible rot would be stopped early. Also, a few more minor points. I don't know what others feel, but I think the way shorten works is intuitive. i.e. the following compresses a file: $ shorten file.wav this creates file.wav.shn and deletes file.wav. This is the way all UNIX compressors; compress, gzip, bzip & lame have worked. They simply add on their own extension without making the mistake of trying to understand and then munge the existing filename. You have the option of specifying this if you want: $ shorten f...

FLAC status
...hance of mis-reporting. I hope to test it with the complete collection of ~41GB uncompressed, but it's a matter of finding the time. I currently have these files compressed using shorten. I was interested in how much FLAC could improve on this. The figures for the files I processed are: wav shn flac GB 8.54 5.51 5.11 % 100 64.5 59.8 Extrapolating that over the ~41GB, means it looks like FLAC will save me ~2GB over shorten. BTW That's shorten 3.1 which puts the seek tables on the end of the .shn files. Are the .flac files seekable? Cheers. Mark Powell - UNIX System Administrator...

...them with cool edit and "saved as"ed them to my drive. These files encoded fine and the extraced/converted files have the correct md5sum. Is there a program that can scan wav files to see if they are correct? The files play and burn fine, but do not encode well. Another thing is that shn encodes these files correctly, while flac does not. Does something need to be coded for flac to do this? I hope this made some sense... [Flac-users] Fingerprint Verification Problem
...ion settings are used, while the audio > remains > unchanged. It's the other way around. Let me sum up my limited knowledge about how stuff is seeded: Shorten: UserA starts with WAV file UserA compresses with shorten, default arguments UserA creates fingerprint by running md5sum on the SHN file (If the user recompresses with different options or a different version of shorten, the resulting shorten file will be different causing the md5sum to be different.) UserA makes a text file with the MD5 sum and SHN filename UserB downloads text file and SHN file, runs md5sum on it, and compare...

flac worse than shorten
I've found a wav of an entire album that shorten compresses better than flac. Is this supposed to be possible? wav 388,374,044 flac-6 239,109,203 shn 236,457,697 Cheers. Auto-detecting wav input
Hi, I notice that this still doesn't work: $ shorten -x a.shn - | flac -V - a.flac You have to put the -fw in there: $ shorten -x a.shn - | flac -fw -V - a.flac Could wav format not be the default. Or even better could flac not auto-detact wav input, which is relatively easy? Cheers. Mark Powell - UNIX System Administrator - The University of Salford Ac...

Hello, all, I'm a newby to FLAC who is used to making .txt source files for his SHN discs. :) I made my first secure EAC > WAV> FAC file days ago and am trying to get proper "source file" info figured out.. the road to 1.0...
This is a fantastic selling point, and one that I've never really thought of. Back in the early days of etree (a whole three years ago ;) ), before we learned the virtues of MD5 sums for SHN downloads, I downloaded a Hornsby show from someone. Of course, an MD5 wasn't available, but when I decompressed and Shoren didn't throw a sanity error my way, I figured all was well. I burned 5 copies, only to find out 3 days later that halfway through one track, one channel cut out for...

...formation on contacting the right people, he mentioned you guys and I need a little info. Anything that you guys have as far as how playback of the FLAC standard could be played back via WinAmp or similar programs (someone's gotta be working on this, it's a must-have to help convert us SHN archivists) would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there are any other Macintosh users out there I'd like to hear some ideas about what needs to be included and how we might get this accomplished. Also, I have currently adopted the new MacOS X which is completely Unix-based (Free BSD 4.2...

how to get flac fingerprint from a wav?
...le as an open source Unix command-line code, which would include Mac OS X. I did a little research, and I am concerned that md5check computes an md5 signature for the entire wav file, not just the audio. Thus it won't compare with the ffp. Apparently, xACT allows you to create the st5 (shn md5) files. But the original poster and I want a command-line solution to create an st5 for comparison against metaflac's report. I think I have xACT, but I don't want to be grabbing the mouse and clicking dialogs when I want to check a whole directory of file signatures. Any Tap...

MD5 Question
....wav checksum is identical after i compress and decompress with FLAC, so it appears nothing is getting stripped. Thanks, and great job on 1.0.3. It's working great with the frontend under Win2k. Now, time to get out my DOS book and create some DOS batch files for converting a drive full of SHN files to FLAC. ;) It's all lossless, and it's all good! MW
