Error copying folder with desktop.ini
...ktop ini with the LocalizedResourceName attribute, then Windows copies the file and immediately tries to copy the file again and therefore asking whether the file shall be replaced or not. My desktop.ini is copied from a Windows 8 standard profile %UserProfile%\Favorites folder and contains: [. ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=Test If I copy this desktop.ini to any folder and then copy the folder to a Samba share, then Windows 8 seems first to copy the folder and Desktop.ini correctly and then pops up a window which says "The destination already has a file named "desktop.ini" with...

Windows XP login
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 When WinXP users login to the samba domain a text file opens that contains: [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787 This seems to be tied to the roaming profile, it only surfaced once I enabled roaming profiles but I am not sure how to correct it. I also noticed that the desktop background setting is persistent when a user logs on but the actual...

Interpreting desktop.ini
...esides the windows explorer). I've seen in the archive many posts how to avoid accessing these files, I now am in the situation, in which i need the desktop.ini files interpreted: In every subdirectory a desktop.ini file is created by the application, a text file with the following content: [.ShellClassInfo] CLSID={79BC0345-1015-11D2-A299-006008312725} This changes the actual folder icon in windows explorer on the local filesystem and on windows shares, but there's no change on a samba share. My environment is the following: I have a samba server running 2.2.8 with the following parameters: [g...

Roaming profiles
I want to setup a linux box with samba as a file and print server for a LAN of 20 NT 4.0 SP3 workstations. I want the home direcotories to be on the server the clients to have roaming profiles. For this, do I have to make the linux box a domain controller? I want to avoid it if I can, because the domain control code in not on the production releases. I don't want to setup an NT server either.
