how to mount the windows shares
Hey friends, I want to mount some windows shares on Linux workstations in my office.I am using FC3 and my shares are on Windows XP pro and Windows 2003 Server. I tried this command to mount those shares mount -t cifs -o username=windowsusename //windows2003/sharename/anotherfolder /mnt/server the samba then asks for the password of the windows user,i gave the correct password but then Linux returns with an error mount error 6 = No such device or address Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) The /anotherfolder exists under windows2003/...

Shortened sharenames
Doing a little shell scripting with smbclient and noticed that smbclient -N -L host only displays the first 13 charachters of the sharename. Since that is totally crippled feel like I must be missing something obvious, but can't track it down. Any pointers on getting FULL sharenames using smbclient? Thanks for the help - AZ

Problem accessing win2k3 shares -- permission denied!
Hi all, I couldn't access win2k3 server shares from my FC2 box. It's got default Fedora Core 2 installation. Kernel: 2.6.5-1.358 Samba: samba-3.0.3-5 I've tried with both smbfs and cifs options. This is what happens, With smbfs: $ mount -t smbfs -o username=admin //ServerIP/sharename /mnt/sharename password: $ $ ls /mnt/sharename ls: /mnt/sharename: Permission denied $ $ ls -l /mnt/ ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? sharename $ less /proc/mounts | grep sharename //ServerIP/sharename /mnt/sharename smbfs rw,nodiratime,nosuid,nodev,file_mode=0664,dir_mode=0775 0 0 $...

cifs reading Samba mounted share...permissions error
...5 server, using cifs, I can mount shares on this server, and can list directories/files, but when I try to read or write any files, I can a permission denied error. So to summarize, if I go to an XP workstation in which I'm logged in as domain administrator, go to run and type: \\FEDORASERVER\SHARENAME I can see files, read files and write to files as domain\administrator has full access to these files/directories. However, if from another Fedora 5 server, I mount the share using: mount -rw -t cifs -o user=domain\\administrator,pass=password //FEDORASERVER/SHARENAME /share/FEDORASERVER/SHAREN...

//server/sharename%user question
...may be working on a project and need access to both their home directories at the same time. Windows NT will let you supply a different user name for each share you access, but it appears Windows 98 will not (different passwords, but not users). The documentation seems to say you can use //server/sharename%user, but that does not seem to work for me. Could someone tell me how to do this? Thank you John Aughey

printernames vs. sharenames
...r would expect). E.g. when I change the drivers of 3 printers to HP Laserjet, I get 3 printers with the names "HP Laserjet [(Copy 1|2)]". These names are different from the names of my CUPS queues and have to be reverted manually. We all work with and configure the printers having the sharenames (aka the queue names) in mind. And -btw- it does not happen, when changing the printer driver of a local queue. Just my point of view... any comments? P.S. To the topic "print spooling messages never go away": We're not able to reproduce it with 3.06rc2. We'll still have...

Unable to mount SMB drive
I have a Windows Server 2003 system I'm trying to back up to a Linux host. when I access the share with smbclient, I can "see" the files (`ls` returns a list of files, etc) smbclient -U shareuser //server/sharename password But, when I try to actually mount the drive, I get "permission denied" errors trying to access the drive. (EG: using `df`) Running the following command takes about 10 seconds: smbmount //server/sharename /mnt/servername -o \ credentials=/path/to/credentials,ro I've...

sharename not found
...y ran into a problem that I could not figure out. I was changing the security from "Share" to "user" and did some other minor changes. When I went to login in some of the user some of them went okay, but then some did not. What I got was a message stating "MS Networking sharename was not found". My only question is what sharename is this message referring to. The clients that this message came up on was win95, win98 and winMe workstations. Whereas other users on the same network using the same OS didn't have the same problem. System is a rhl7.3 server. All oth...

user authentication issue
Hey Jeremy, Thanks for the advice. I followed your suggestion collected the logged information for a single connection attempt (i.e. smbclient //servername/sharename -U username); I've included the log data below (in the postscript). It looks like Samba is still looking for a Unix user account and not finding one. I should mention that it seems that I am able to authenticate as the user; the following command executes properly, for example: smbclient -L /...
