recursive snaptshot
I thought I recalled reading somewhere that in the situation where you have several zfs filesystems under one top level directory like this: rpool rpool/ROOT/osol-112 rpool/export rpool/export/home rpool/export/home/reader you could do a shapshot encompassing everything below zpool instead of having to do it at each level. (Maybe it was in a dream...)

Rollback to running VM
I would like to make a snapshot of a running VM, let it continue to run after the shapshot, and then at some later time roll back the VM to that previous running state. Can I do that with libvirt? If so, how? I understand that this will cause all kinds of havoc with things like ongoing TCP connections, and I accept that risk. -- Gary Jackson

...he items bracketed by \dontrun to appear -- if I didn't think the lines were useful I wouldn't have put them there. Perhaps because I like printed versions I like examples to show not just legal input, but give feedback on what the code does; thus make it to the extent possible look like a shapshot of a session and not just a set of legal input. It is most often output that I will have bracketed. (wrt Gabor's comment, I would rather not turn it into a comment block; it would not look at all like that on the screen). There will be two levels to the response: argue that I really shoul...

libvir: Domain error <domName>: invalid argument in virDomainGetXMLDesc
...main-0 through the virt-manager client (meaning that I already have libvirt, ssh-askpass downloaded and the libvirtd and xend running on my host machine), and on the client machine I can view the window showing the statistics of CPU utilization of my domain-0 and user domain. The attachment shows a shapshot of the virt-manager on my client machine. Now when I try to access the GUI of either of domain-0 or the user domain (by selecting the specific domain and clicking open) I get the following error message in a pop-up on my client and in the libvirtd console on the host: "libvir: Domain error x...

two suggestions about backup
...reatment problem) Second suggestion: How about adding now option "--backup-only" that means making backups only and don't change any destination files? I want to use rsync with LVM snapshot to make incremental backups like below: 1) Make LVM snapshot of file system. 2) Mount shapshots of today and yesterday. 3) Compare it to yesterday's snapshot, and backup files which are updated/deleted using rsync. (Snapshots are read-only.) 4) Delete yesterday's snapshot. So I need rsync not to modefy any destination files, and to make backups only. I attached the tr...

Question on Lazy VM Restore
Hello all, I was wondering if there is an existing mechanism in Xen for restoring a saved/checkpointed VM lazily. By that, I mean that the pages of the VM should be mapped only on access. Currently, restoring a VM from a snapshot seems to take a long time [~20 seconds for 2 GB]. Assuming that there is no lazy-restore functionality, what would be a good way to implement this? Using parts

LVM2 snapshots and XEN = problem :(
...en lvremove. lvremove asks me if I really want to remove the volume and then just hangs forever. In the same time affected domU almost hangs too - it becomes very slow but still live. The only solution of this situation is to shutdown domU, deactivate domU''s LV and then run lvremove for shapshot volume. I googled about this and found that it may be a bug related to SMP (I use P-IV with hyperthreading enabled) but I can''t disable or enable SMP because it''s done by xen itself. Any suggestions/ideas ? -- Best regards Anton Khalikov _____________________________________...

selftest
Thanks for the reply, Besides the problem with source4/lib/messaging/messaging_handlers.c, Good to hear that selftest is actively used, then do I understand it right that 'make test' should succeed? My bigger problem is that it failed with lots of errors. This must be a problem with my build, then, but since this is a fresh tarball I am a bit puzzled. I would appreciate some hint on
