ZFS memory and swap usage
...gling, but found nothing that was useful. The reason I ask is that we have a small issue with some of our DBA''s. We have a server with 16GB of memory, and they are looking at moving over databases to it from a smaller system. The catch is that they are moving to 10g. Oracle suggests a 2GB SGA. They are using top to determine how many databases they can fit on the server (I know, I know...not the right tool) based on top''s reporting of memory and swap usage. What they did as a test is to fire up a single database with a 10GB SGA "to simulate 5 2GB databases" while runn...

udev rules for /dev/sd[a-z] ?
I have a third party application that I want to run a CentOS4 box that is expecting to access the generic SCSI devices through /dev/sga, /dev/sgb, etc. However, the devices set up by udev are /dev/sg0, /dev/sg1 etc. Does anyone know what syntax I could use to create a udev rule that creates symlinks sga -> sg0 etc. for each sg[0-N] device? Thanks James Pearson

Oracle on ZFS vs. UFS
...The goal is not to measure or optimize the database performance, but to compare ZFS to UFS in similar configurations. At the moment I''m preparing the tests at home. The test setup is as follows: . Solaris snv_37 . 2 x AMD Opteron 252 . 4 GB RAM . 2 x 80 GB ST380817AS . Oracle 10gR2 (small SGA (320m)) The disks also contain the OS image (mirrored via SVM). On the remaining space I have created one zpool (one disk) resp. one MD-Volume with an UFS filesystem ontop (the other disk) Later I want to rerun the tests on an old E3500 (4x400MHz, 2GB RAM) with two A5200 attached (~15 still alive...

Rule of Thumb for zfs server sizing with (192) 500 GB SATA disks?
I''m trying to get maybe 200 MB/sec over NFS for large movie files (need large capacity to hold all of them). Are there any rules of thumb on how much RAM is needed to handle this (probably RAIDZ for all the disks) with zfs, and how large a server should be used? The throughput required is not so large, so I am thinking an X4100 M2 or X4150 should be plenty. This message posted from
