[PATCH] daemon: parted: use --part-type with recent sfdisk
Check whether --part-type is supported (in the rewritten sfdisk in util-linux >= 2.26), and use it instead of --print-id & --change-id. The actual result should be the same, just not using a (recently) deprecated command line API. --- daemon/parted.c | 36 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++---- 1 file changed, 32 insertions(+), 4 deletions(-) diff --git...

sfdisk: No more Cylinder / Head / Sector support in util-linux 2.26 and later
Hi, it was brought to my attention that sfdisk has lost the ability to deal with C/H/S addressing as of util-linux 2.26, so the -C ,-H, -S command line parameters are no longer supported. Should there be a compile-time check based on "sfdisk -h" output that would cause daemon/sfdisk.c to be compiled only if something like the followin...

Advise on recovering 2TB RAID1
Hi all, I have one drive fails on a software 2TB RAID1. I have removed the failed partition from mdraid and now ready to replace the failed drive. I want to ask for opinion if there is better way to do that other than: 1. Put the new HDD. 2. Use parted to recreate the same partition scheme. 3. Use mdadm to rebuild the RAID. Especially #2 is rather tricky. I have to create an exact partition

sfdisk -g support in DomU
Back in January there was a mail thread on this subject ( http://lists.xensource.com/archives/html/xen-devel/2005-01/msg00659.html ), however I see that blkfront still does not include ioctl support for disk geometry. So, any application that uses "sfdisk -g" to get the geometry of a partition, or disk, will fail when run in DomU. Is this a deliberate omission? How to Backup and Restore MBR within Logical Volumes?
Hi All, I have several Xen virtual machines within logical volumes using LVM2. I did not use disk images for performance reasons. Conventionally, if I want to clone my virtual machines, I have to dd the LV to an image file. But this consumes a lot of time and harddisk space. So, instead of doing that, I want to use losetup and kpartx with my logical volumes, which contain operating systems of

[PATCH 1/2] resize: Work around regression in sfdisk (RHBZ#1285847).
'sfdisk --part-type' used to merely set the MBR ID byte in the partition. However since sfdisk was rewritten, it now "helpfully" corrupts the first sector of the partition if you change the type byte from an ordinary partition to an extended partition. So we need to change the order in whic...

software raid - better management advice needed
Hi, I've used mdadm for years now to manage software raids. The task of using fdisk to first create partitions on a spare drive sitting on a shelf (raid 0 were my 1st of 2 drives failed) is kind of bugging me now. After using fdisk to create the same partition layout on the new drive as is on the existing drive and then using mdadm to finish every thing up is a little tedious. Any

lvm errors after replacing drive in raid 10 array
I thought I'd test replacing a failed drive in a 4 drive raid 10 array on a CentOS 5.2 box before it goes online and before a drive really fails. I 'mdadm failed, removed', powered off, replaced drive, partitioned with sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdb, and finally 'mdadm add'ed'. Everything seems fine until I try to create a snapshot lv. (Creating a snapshot lv worked before I replaced the drive.) Here's what I'm seeing. # lvcreate -p r -s -L 8G -n home-snapshot /dev/vg0/homelv Couldn'...

Stripe vs Cylinder alignement...
Hi, I modified my kickstart to do some custom partioning and formating in a pre-install script. I am trying to align the partitions on the RAID stripe (and format with a correct stride). But, sfdisk complains that it does not start/end on a cylinder boundary (used -L option to limit complaining). Since the cylinder size is not a multiple of the stripe size, I cannot align on both. I tried to align the begining on the stripe and the end on the end of a cylinder, but sfdisk still compains... Bas...
