Bug in "stats4" package - "confint" method
Dear R developers, I noticed a bug in the stats4 package, specifically in the confint method applied to ?mle? objects. In particular, when some ?fixed? parameters define the log likelihood, these parameters are stored within the mle object but they are not used by the ?confint" method, which retrieves their value from the global environment (whenever they still exist). Sample code: >

After describing my problem to Alan, I've done what I proposed myself last saturday: I've turned off compression in my home directory and tried to save the file several times without modifications, exactly in the same way I've done to reproduce the problem. Et voil?! I could save the file

Is Biarch with 6.x now dead?
I'm experimenting with 6.2 now. Things seem to be really great so far! Distribution closure is one of my favourite pets. So I tried to install everything. I found only one problem, but that's another (minor) thing. But I found almost nothing under /usr/lib. So, Biarch is really dead? Funny! A couple of years back, I finally opted for CentOS instead of Debian just because of Biarch

select lists - DB best practice

This will involve lots of drop down lists with options like ''hair colour'', ''height'', ''Location'' etc etc. The way I m thinking about doing it is to create new table for each group of options

dumb, dumb question
I''m very new to shorewall. My setup is IP Gateway (CentOS 4 + Shorewall) with 3 NIC cards. Shorewall works great on the firewall machine. Bind also works (local net machines get IPs fine). Under firestarter, all works great. With shorewall, the loc machines can not route past the firewall. They can connect to the firewall, but not past it. Exactly what information should I post to get

Retaining undelete data on ext3
Having just spent a day trying to recover a deleted ext3 file for a friend, I'm wondering about this way of maintining undelete information in ext3, like is done for ext2: The last step in the deletion process would be to put back the (previously zeroed) block pointers. Since it gets logged to the journal, I _think_ that this should be safe. The worst that would happen is that, if the plug
