/etc/passwd.rpmnew changes "x" to "*"
What would be the effect of changing the password field in "/etc/passwd" from "x" to "*"? I noticed I have an "/etc/passwd.rpmnew" file which changes the password of many service accounts from "x" to "*". I am wondering if I should merge those changes into my "/etc/passwd" file.

qemu-img not compiled?
I''m running latest 3.1.4. I need access to qemu-img to convert some image
files. However this binary is not compiled after doing make world and make
install. I notice that the source code is present, but I cannot figure out
how to make it compile and install along with qemu-dm?
Am I missing something?

Max number of Network Aliases?
I know that there is a 3 network interface max for Xen 3.*. But is there a
max number of network aliases?
Since they are all on the same subnet then really it should just bridging
the traffic. Correct? Does anyone have a PV DomU that has more than 3 IP
addresses being used inside it?
Thanks,
Ryan

SuSE /var/ disk space
Hi all,
I''m playing with Xen for the first time, and encounter problems when
installing a client.
We basically have limited space on the /var/ partition, and Xen seems to
use this as temporary storage during installation.
Is there anyway of configuring it to use some other location?
Cheers,
Dean.

OpenSolaris 200805 as pv domU
Hi there,
I''ve written a small manual on how to install OpenSolaris 2008/05 as paravirtualized domU.
http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/OpenSolarisPVonLinux
Maybe, this is useful for someone.
Cheers,
Stepha

iSCSI domU - introducing more stability
Hi there,
during peak load on some running domU, I noticed random iSCSI "Reported LUNs data has changed" which forced me to shutdown the respective domU, re-login the target and do a fsck before starting domU again.
This occurred on a 16 core machine, having only about 14 domUs running. Spare memory has been occupied by dom0 (about 40G). Each domU has it''s own iSCSI target.

Intel VT-d Support
Hello all,
please tell me, how can I be sure that
my Xen installation is built with Intel VT-d support?
Something like
xm info | grep -i KEY-REGULAR-EXPRESSION
xm dmesg | grep -i KEY-REGULAR-EXPRESSION
What line I should look for?
And if it''s really built with it,
how can I be sure, that Xen has successfully
initialized VT-d hardware?
I have read [1] and the lists archives

Snom phones, blinking lights and call pickup
Hi!
I have the following questions/problems with * 1.4.
We have several Snom phones (320 and 360). Hints are configured in
extensions.conf (core show hints shows the correct values). My Snom phone
is registered to some numbers (validated by using sip show
subscriptions). I see the lights blinking if someone calls the subscribed
number and steady lights if the call is established.
So far, so

VT-d "partial" success - passing DVB-S tuner to Windows DomU (based off previous thread of similar name!)
Hi All,
So I''ve got a DVB-S PCI Express card ($30 USD Twinhan AD-SE200 off
eBay) that''s being passed via VT-d/pciback in Xen 3.2.1 under CentOS
5.2 to a Windows XP SP3 which works! ... except for one small issue...
Motherboard is an Intel DQ35JO that much people has had success with
and an Intel E8400 CPU.
The issue is that when dealing with FTA MPEG-2 transport streams (DVB-S

CentOS 5.0 ifcfg-eth0 gets renamed on boot
Hello,
I created a CentOS 5.0 x86_64 guest under Debian Etch with Xen 3.0.3 and it
boots fine except for one re-occuring problem - whenever it boots the
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 script gets renamed to .bak and
doesn''t configure the ethernet device.
Here is the content of this file:
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static

Centos 4 RPM doesn't create drive "c:"
I installed Wine as root using "wine-20050524-1centos4winehq.i686.rpm". I then
switched to my normal user account and ran "winefile". The "winefile" program
run and displays drive "e:" and "z:", but no "c:".
I looked through "~/.wine/config", and it appears "c:" is mapped to
"/usr/share/wine-c". But I

Restricting the manager interface to a number?
Hi!
Some persons are using a TAPI driver to connect via the manager interface
to the asterisk (1.4). While I can give every user his own password,
I didn?t find a way to restrict a user to a certain phone number, so that
he can only dial with his number via the TAPI driver and can only answer
calls for another number.
Is the possible? If yes, how?
Thanks for the answers.

VT-d support in HVM?
Hi,
I''ve recently setup a few machines with 3.2 64bit without any unresolvable problem.
These machines all run pv domU''s and a view "basic" hvm domUs.
As I''ve got one machine left for internal use and testing, I would like to take a
look at pciback with VT-d support (bios screen shows a VT-d [enable|disable]).
My question is, do I need to add patches, or use

unable to start more than two PVM hosts on one host
Hi,
I am using xen 3.1.0 on opensuse 10.3, for more details see below.
When I try to start the third domU, then this will not work, I get the
error: Error: Boot loader didn''t return any data!
When I shutdown an other one, I can successfully start the machine that
failed, see my log below. The xen configuration files are all similar to
this one:
