Manually mounting partitions in "linux rescue" mode
...there were no devices in the new root's /dev subdirectory although when I had previosuly booted into CentOS 5.5 on my hard disk off course they were there. The other thing I noticed is that after the 'chroot' the 'mount' command showed only my root partition mounted on /dev/sdb8 where it actually exists ( along with sysfs and proc which I mounted from the old root ). But despite this there are no subdirectories under the new root's /dev. I am just trying to re-initialize 'grub' so I can boot my CentOS 5.5 system again. There must be a way to successfully do...

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Hello, Yesterday I tried to back up a 40GB maildir . I tried to move the maildir from home to external HDD but failed. Decided then to compress it(which took several hours). Now changing the disk format from FAT to exFAT to allow the transfer for the large compressed file. How does one back up emails on a external drive? Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

CentOS 5.4 Upgrade installation failure
...L in order to insulate myself from partition label changes I wanted to make. This worked fine in CentOS 5.3. When I attempted to upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4 using the installation disk and telling it to upgrade rather than do a new install, the installation correctly found my root partition as /dev/sdb8. When I proceeded with the upgrade I received the error: "Error mounting device UUID=cee298a0-9c47-4a3a-ac84-23db4d20edd5 as /. No such file or directory. This most likely means the partition has not been formatted." But of course it has been formatted and is my / partition running C...
