Numbering of releases
Am I right in thinking that the numbering of the versions are in synch
with the gcc version that one is recommened to build with? In other
words "use gcc version 3.foo".

ext3 performance with hardware RAID5
...prove performance for RAID 5 volumes, especially when the log
file is on a separate mirrored volume. I have also read that using
data=journal can further improve performance for applications such as NFS.
For these tests I created a 256MB partition in the mirrored disk set for the
log device: /dev/sdb6. The RAID5 volume is a 500GB partition: /dev/sda1.
Here is a summary of the results:
Log location:
- log location does not affect the file system performance as measured by
the sequential output and sequential input tests
- random seek rate improves with an external log (25%)

Utility tool for dm-ioband.
Hi everyone,
I made a utility tool for dm-ioband version 0.0.4, named iobandctl.
It enables you to easily apply I/O bandwidth control to an entire disk,
and manage it. It helps you set the percentage of bandwidth
to give each partition, and each user, process, group, or cgroup.
(You are not able to use cgroup support yet, because the dm-ioband

ext3 and df don't agree ?
I've taken my RH7.1 system, rebuild kernel (2.4.9 with ext3 patches) and
followed the ext3 instructions to install.
Everything seems to work OK but -
df -k
doesn't list the ext3 partition (my root partition).
Is this a known problem ?
If not, how best can I gather diagnostics to identify the source of the
problem ?
Thanks

Copying CentOS to new drive
...a running system to a new drive.
As a postscript, I'm wondering if it would have been preferable
to run the machine under a Live OS, and simply copy the root partition
to the new drive?
Eg while running under the LiveOS,
# mkdir /mnt/old /mnt/new
# mount /dev/sda7 /mnt/old
# mount /dev/sdb6 /mnt/new
# cp -avx /mnt/old /mnt/new
or
# rsync -ax --progress /mnt/old /mnt/new

External USB Drive partitioning, formatting and configuring Bacula server
...hing
I don't understand, when partitions are created, why does Linux number
it awkwardly? For example, I created 1 Primary partition of 10% disk,
then created 1 Extended partition of 90% disk. Inside that extended
partition, I created 3 logical partitions 33% each. It went numbering
sdb1, sdb5, sdb6 and sdb7. Where's the hell 2,3 and 4? Anyways, I've
got my partitions now and formatted them so, it's all good.
Thanks for your help with this. Next, as I went through Bacula's
pages, I found that they mostly use tape drives for
backup....ugh.......how can I use my usb partitions w...

Installing on LVM on SW-RAID
...AID level 1, but I'm
unable to understand how to use the installer correctly.
What I'm trying to do is emulate something I've already done with
another distro where:
sda5 \
RAID1 --> /boot
sdb5 /
sda6 \
RAID1 --> LVM --> /root, /home, /usr, /var... etc.
sdb6 /
I've succesfully created the raid, and the PV for LVM, but I can't
figure out how to create a VG inside the PV.
Is it possible using the installer, or should I better install it
using one disk, and once installed create the raid/pv/vg, and move
everything around by hand?
Many thanks in...

Re: [PATCH] open files in kjounald (2)
Sorry, got it the wrong way around :-(
Hello everybody!
As I wrote in my mail the previous week ("BUG: 2.4.19pre1 & journal_thread
& open filehandles") I followed the problem a little bit further.
Here's my patch; I beg the ext3-maintainers (Stephen, Andreas, Andrew) to
have a look at it and submit it to Marcelo and Linux for inclusion.
