Command line editing.
I've looked through the FAQ and can't find anything about this. I'm working on a Sun machine, running Solaris 2.7. I'm a new R-user; have been using Splus for millenia, and finally decided it was time I got going with R. So I downloaded R, installed it, fiddled about a bit, and found that command-line editing was absent. Scrounging through the documentation some more, I saw it

Linux kerberos to Windows AD 2000/2003
I have spent the last 4-5 hours scrounging google articles on this and have found 2 solutions. The problem is one of them is something that we will not do (as MS will not support extending AD with Services For Unix(SFU)). The other is simply configuring kerberos and pam on the linux system. No problem there from what I can tell. Ticket cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_0 Default principal: userid at

increasing memory size
Dear R people, I wonder if some kind person can tell me the correct syntax to set the R_VSIZE environmental variable. I tried R_VSIZE = 10M in ~/.Renviron and also export R_VSIZE = 10M. These don't seem to work. I scrounged around looking for details about this, couldn't find any, got fed up. Scoping and nls.
A colleague of mine is trying to use nls() to effect an optimization, and is encountering a scoping problem. I should know how to solve it for him but .... well, I just don't. I also had a quick scrounge of the archives --- I know I've seen this topic addressed before --- but I couldn't track it down. So here's a toy example that demonstrates the problem: hhh <-

Covariance of data with missing values.
I have a data matrix X (n x k, say) each row of which constitutes an observation of a k-dimensional random variable which I am willing, if not happy, to assume to be Gaussian, with mean ``mu'' and covariance matrix ``Sigma''. Distinct rows of X may be assumed to correspond to independent realizations of this random variable. Most rows of X (all but 240 out of 6000+ rows)

Interactive PXE install
I've got a system (Supermicro P8SCT) that lacks a floppy or CD and it's old enough that it won't boot from a USB stick. Before I scrounge an optical drive to plug in, I thought perhaps I could install over the network, as I see "legacy LAN boot" in the BIOS menu. The guides for a LAN install I've found all want to do an automated kickstart install. Are there any

simple script idea
Hi there... Foolish me.... all was going sooooooo well and then I got a wild hair and updated to the latest clamav .92 today. It is possible I should have just done an rpm update install yet there were some changes in ClamAV lately and I didn't know how well that would go. up till now I spec'd and rolled my own Clamav RPMs without milter somewhat recently ClamAV changed from having a

Mounting swap fails in domU (badiane)
Has anyone experienced a swap failing to be mounted in domU''s? I created a LVM swap space, ran mkswap and made it available on the same line as the root partition (also on LVM) in each of the domU''s config file. But it fails to be mounted and I''m running without swap space. That wouldn''t be too much of a problem if I had a lot of mem to play with but

Harware vs Kernel RAID (was Re: External SATA enclosures: SiI3124 and CentOS 5?)
...t the limitation on throughput is the drive itself, and that SATA resolved the bottleneck that PATA caused with kernel raid. The arguments then go on to give numerous examples where a failing hardware raid controller CAUSED data loss, where a raid card died and an identical raid card had to be scrounged from eBay to even read the data on the drives, etc. - problems that apparently don't happen with kernel software raid. The main exception I've seen to using software raid are high availability setups where a separate external unit ($$$) provides the same hard disk to multiple servers. T...

OT - Recruiting ROR developer (ownership %, game related)
I am recruiting a ROR developer to join my team to bring a fairly well researched/thought out project to a beta state (and beyond!) ROR experience with commercial (preferably including familiarity with payments technology and interfaces) sites would be prefered, although what I really need is some new blood and guts to kickstart things. Working knowledge of unix internals (specifically

Replacement brackets for Supermicro UIO SAS cards....
I just wanted to share this useful info as I haven''t seen it anywhere. My scrounging-genius colleague, Lawrence, found standard PCI-e replacement brackets for the justifiably popular Supermicro AOC-USAS-L8i cards. They cost a few bucks each, fit perfectly and allow us to use these cards extensively without any case-hackery.

Serverworks HT1000 chipset drivers (Supermicro H8SSL motherboard)
Anyone using boards with this chipset? I've gotten some dual core single cpu boxes along with the physical dual cpu boxes I just received and they're using the Serverworks HT1000 (Broadcom 5785) chipset. My CentOS 4.2 DVD doesn't want to recognize the chipset so I can't see any of the SATA drives in the integrated SATA ports. Drives on 3Ware cards work as expected, but I

TFTP support multiple NICs?
The scenario: Installed a Ubuntu 5.10 Linux server with dhcp3-server, apache2 and tftpd-hpa to serve as a mass Linux deployment station. It can serve up to 200 PCs at one time installing Linux using just one NIC card in the server. Recently, we wanted to expand our bandwidth to push out these PCs faster. The problem: If there is more than one NIC in the computer, TFTP will not work properly.

Re: card dialer phone (thanks for the info!)
Folks, Thanks to Jerry Jones, David Josephson, John Novack, and George Cohn for their posts about how a key system phone works. Now I'm starting to scrounge around for a KSU so I can look into the Collector's Net work :-) Most of the phones in the house are (fairly) new single-line analog jobs; but, since "retro-telephony" is an amusing part of this hobby, it seems only

Win2K VPN server + Samba WINS trouble
Hi all, after scrounging through the archives for a good while, I didn't come up with anything similar to my trouble. I have a VPN setup that consists for 2 linux boxes running freeswan to make a tunnel between 2 subnets, the atypical example of a vpn. I am adding a windows 2000 l2tp server for road worrier use. Everything is setup and running perfectly except for the fact that the

SMB passthrough authentication and Encrypted passwords
...unencrypted passwords, and having to go to every 98 box and modify the registry to use plaintext passwords. If I switch encrypt passwords=YES, then from every machine I try, be it 98, 2k, or xp, I receive an invalid password error. There's obviously something I'm missing here, but I've scrounged the net and archives and have found very little documentation on this. My guess is that the problem is due to a misconfiguration on the PDC end involving security settings, but I've mucked about as much as I can on that, and not been able to solve the issue. Here's the relevant section of...
