Replace SBS2003 with Samba4
Hello all, I'm currently investigating the option to completely replace a SBS2003 DC with a Samba4 DC. My research (mostly on samba.org guides) shows that it is feasible, however I'd like to get feedback from the community on my goals. Current status: A Windows SBS 2003 is the PDC and a W2008 R2 server is acting as secondary DC. Domain operational level is 2003. There are ~40-50

Replace SBS2003 with Samba4
Anastasios, I've done exactly what you want to do, only starting from SBS2008. Our office went down this road in 2014 when we investigated upgrading from SBS2008 only to find that MS replacement, Server Essentials, did not support Exchange. We currently have a "no cloud" policy, so going to Office 365, as you have done, was not an option (and btw, have you not co...

Problem joining a samba DC to a windows domain
...he Windows protocol, and the code in this case thinks it's not > supported. GET_TGT (GETCHGREQ_V10) should be supported in Windows Server > 2008 R2 onwards - what version of Windows are you running? Well based on your explanation above this problem makes perfect sense. The existing DC is sbs2008 which is running 2008 SP2. I guess I need to remember that anything older then 2008 R2 needs to start with 4.7 until there is a better solution. > Rowland's idea of joining a 4.7 DC (and then doing a 'drs replicate > --full-sync'), then joining a 4.8 DC to the 4.7 DC should work....

Adding/removing domain workstations
I am running Samba4 version 4.2.12 as our office AD/DC. Two questions on domain member computers: 1) When I un-join a Windows 7 workstation from the domain (Start > Computer > Properties > Advanced > Computer Name > Change > Member of: Workgroup), it does not remove that computer from the list of domain computer. I have to either use samba-tool or (Windows)RAS Users and

Why is Samba4 not recommended as a file server?
...than a year and a half with WIN7 workstations in user offices and a couple of experimental Linux domain member workstations. We've never had a hiccup, never lost a file that I'm aware of and have had zero problems with Samba4 doing all this -- which is more than I can say for good 'ole SBS2008 in its day. All that said to demonstrate that we've been using Samba4 for supposedly "not recommended" purposes in a real production environment for quite a while. Furthermore, outfits like Zentyal must be doing the same. So, to repeat the main question: Why is Samba4 not recommen...
