Newbie with problems on Debian Sarge
I have a Debian Sarge box that I am trying to get icecast2 and ices2 up and
running on. I'm having problems, but do not know where to look to identify the
problem.
I have my audio working with ALSA - microphone in plays through my audio out.
I'm running a basic configuration using the defaults provided, and the ALSA
example config file for ices.
When I try to connect to the server using

free license to it we would need to do so -- especially since we would be
competing with Dolby for surround mindshare!) Hopefully, we would also be
able to drive two SBLive cards in parallel eventually, giving us 8-channels
of output, but that remains to be seen. (The driver doesn't even support
4-channel output yet...)
For now, however, independant of how fast the software decoding side of this

quality settings
...go total overkill with -q 10. With LAME, I at
least used to know 192 kbps with -q0 was a perfect size/quality proportion. I
can't seem to be able to choose with the OGG settings...heck, even -q 3 doesn't
really sound bad to me (on my Cambridge Soundworks speakers, the ones that
came with my SBLive).
Any suggestions as to which settings to use?

Newbie with problems on Debian Sarge
...If you can hear your microphone then the problem isn't occuring before
Ices.
If you hear silence, do the following:
1. Load up alsamixer.
2. Cursor across to Mic and check that it is captured. If it isn't, press
space and it should capture.
3. If you're using something like an SBLive, you may well need to turn up
some kind of master record volume. I have an SBLive and on my card, the
control is called Capture and I currently have it at about 40%. Where you
should have it will depend on the strength of your input signal.
If you change anything and it subsequently works, do...

afaik the sblive family of cards work at 48k and resample everything
else on-the-fly....

Live stuff -- voice to music to voice etc. ?
Hi all,
I have the Icecast2 server running perfectly and the iceS streamer
feeding it either /dev/dsp or a playlist of ogg files, depending on
which config I run iceS with (I have three config files: one for live,
one for music, and one default (current)). I'm using Slackware w/the
2.4.22 kernel.
The problem I'm having is perhaps theoretical: how can I talk a little,
play some

wow! and what about h/w players for vorbis files?
wow! i must say vorbis deprecates mp3! lol.
although, i had to use the "OSS/3d for XMMS" plugin on my sblive value
w/ 4 point sound to get a proper base. On my other box with a diff card,
bass is just fine.
however, are there any h/w players for vorbis files? the faq only states
one manufacturer called iObjects but i see no portable players!
Basically, i want to player vorbis files thru my car cassette...

WineOn64Bit
Hello to all.
I have a VERY important correction to this article.
To compile wine on Debian Etch amd64 (kernel 2.6.17) you'll need some changes:
1. You don't need to make the X11R6 symlinks
2. The package "ia32-libs-dev" does not longer exist, you need libc6-dev-i386
3. make and make depend have to be run with LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/lib32"
I hope now it is all

Directsound deadlocks
...it constantly crashed (or better, seemed to get
stuck in a deadlock) during startup. It was during a DirectSound
SetCooperativeLevel call, and the console kept saying 'timed out.

Now, I'm using ALSA with OSS emulation (through the snd-pcm-oss kernel
module) and a SBLive card, so I just unloaded all sound modules from the
kernel, restarted Diablo, and it worked perfect, without sound.
I've also tried this with another simple DirectX game, same thing, locks
up with sound, works fine without. Tried the WineX CVS code, but that
gave me nothing but 'Expect...

Wine and audio
I am new to Wine and have a broad question. I'm primarily interested in
audio. I know that audio can be one of the more difficult aspects of
development, at least partly due to real-time issues.
Now, for the question: Is there much going on with Wine and audio?
E.g., using a SBLive!, should getting a program that records to work be
overly difficult, is it being done all the time, or somewhere in between?
Thanks,
SJR

Sound stutter problem
Is there any way to control this? I get severe stuttering accompanied
by repeated messages eg
>fixme:dsound:DSOUND_MixOne problem with underrun detection (mixlen=57312 < primary_done=64624)
when running a game program (Broken Sword II). I have an SBLive soundcard. Music and SFX
are OK, but speech is not. I have the usual (default) [WinMM] configuration, and [dsound]
is also at default. Is this a game problem or a wine problem?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Problem with configuring the sound.
Hello,
I am having problems with the set-up of my sound under wine. I am using latest
creative opensource drivers for my sblive card. Here is how my config file
looks:

"Drivers" = "wineoss.drv"
"WaveMapper" = "msacm.drv"
"MidiMapper" = "midimap.drv"
[dsound]

When I start a program, such as Half-Life, I get the following error:

DVD Audio & Vorbis
I recently bought a DVD Audio disc and I searched the web and wasn't
really able to find much about DVD Audio and Linux. I have a few
questions that I was hoping some people on this list might be able to
answer.
How can I extract the uncompressed DVD Audio (not the DTS Audio portion
of the disc, but the 96khz/24bit/5.1 pcm part)?

Are there many cards in this category? I'dve thought that all cards would
support 44100, it being the standard that it is. Your comments however
suggest experience of this problem.
Geoff.
