Any Xen kernel based on something newer than 2.6.18 ?
Hello all, I''m trying to get my servers to work with Xen, but as I use sata2, it looks like only a recent kernel will do the job. But unferotunately, ony and official 2.6.8 is provided, which doesn''t boot at all on those machines. I''ve tried ubuntu''s 2.6.22-xen, but ti looks very buggy. Where could we find patches for 2.6.22/23 to add Xen? How...

disk I/O problems and Solutions
...er was 3000) with 12 drive bays. We ordered it with just 4 x SATAII drives, and were going to put it on a different system as a RAID10. These are just 7200 RPM drives - the goal was cheaper storage because the SAS drives are about twice as much per drive, and it is only a 300G drive versus the 1T SATA2 drives. IIRC the SATA2 drives are about $200 each and the SAS 300G drives about $500 each. So I have 2 thoughts with this 12 disk array. 1 is to fill it up with 12 x cheap SATA2 drives and hope that even though the spin-rate is a lot slower, that the fact that it has more drives will make it p...

Force SATA1 on AOC-SAT2-MV8
I have a supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and am having some issues getting drives to work. From what I can tell, my cables are to long to use with SATA2. I got some drives to work by jumpering them down to sata1, but other drives I can''t jumper without opening the case and voiding the drive warranty. Does anyone know if there is a system setting to drop it back to SATA1? I use zfs on a raid2 if makes a difference. This is on release of Ope...

Switching To Raid1
I have this ASUS M2NBP-VM motherboard http://tinyurl.com/3xby3h running CentOS 4.4 as a web/email server. It has a 500Gb SATA2 drive with about 32Gb in use. The motherboard supports hardware raid. Is there a way to switch to RAID1 without reinstalling or loosing any data? Also, if I am running raid how do I know if there is a failure on one of the drives anyway? Is hardware RAID1 a good idea? CentOS 4 and SATA RAID
...blems with it. I'm still not clear, though, if SATA in general is a problem or just specific functionality or hardware. Do I understand correctly that "mainboard built-in" SATA RAID is a nono on CentOS? That I would need a third-party RAID card for this? What about SATA non-RAID or SATA2? Is SATA supposed to work in general or do the disks need to run in IDE mode? Do I generally need drivers from the hardware (mainboard, chipset) vendor or is "normal" SATA supposed to work with the packaged drivers? Kai

Are SSD disks worth the cost for server usage?
Hi, we want to upgrade our infrastructure and are considering renting two different types of server by a provider: - A: one is with 80 GB SSD (and 12 GB memory) http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_ssd.xml - B: the other with 750 GB SATA2 (and 8 GB memory). http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_best_of.xml The target infrastructure will host: - a few public web sites (PHP / MySQL) - a development infrastructure (subversion, bugzilla, automated builds) This will use KVM virtualization with Cent OS 5.4 hosts and guests. On the long run...

Which Linux OS on Athlon amd64, to comfortably run R?
Dear R-users. I started using it (Ubuntu 7.10 at work and FC4 on laptop) on a regular basis on May. I must say I'm quite comfortable with it, even if I have to re-learn a lot of things. But this is not a problem, I will improve my knowledge with time. My main...

Asus L1N64 - a good candidate for a ZFS based home server?
This Asus board looks promising, assuming the parts (nForce 680a chipset) are Solaris friendly: http://www.asus.com.tw/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=136&l3=486&model=1530&modelmenu=2 The board boasts 12 (!) SATA2 ports. The FX-7x series CPUs appear to be a very cost effective ($799) 4 core solution. Ian

OpenVox A400P01 not detected
...Has someone used the OpenVox A400P01 (ie. a supposedly Digium-compatible A400P board with a single FXO module www.openvox.com.cn/products_detail.php?genre_id=9&id=28) successfully? I've put it in an older PC with a Gigabyte GA-7ZX motherboard, then a more recent PC with an Asrock K8NF4G-SATA2: dmesg returns nothing :-/ Is there something specific that needs to be done in either the BIOS or Linux to get this board to work? Thank you.
