Off Topic: Statistical "philosophy" rant
R-Listers.
The following is a rant originally sent privately to Frank Harrell in
response to remarks he made on this list. The ideas are not new or original,
but he suggested I share it with the list, as he felt that it might be of
wider interest, nonetheless. I have real doubts about this, and I apologize
in advance to those who agree that I should have kept my remarks private.

cartograms in R?
Q: Has anyone implemented cartograms [**] in R? A search on the R
site turned up
https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-sig-geo/2005-December/000698.html
which led to

Dear All,
I will appreciate some
suggestions of R packages for "ESTIMATION OF THE EXPONENT OF
POWER-LAW FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS". I have been searching at
the R-help list several keywords for this subject and I did not find
a very specific package, except the useful normalp package. I
believe there are others but I was not able to identify it. I have

It necessary make backup the .glusterfs directory ?
Hi All,
I have two glusterfs servers and doing the backup of these is very slow,
when it does not fail.
I have thousand and thousand and thousand files...
Apparently the directory .glusterfs has some responsibility for the
backup failure.
Is necessary to make a backup of the .glusterfs directory?
Thanks in advance.

Fitting pareto distribution / plotting observed & fitted dists
...the Pareto Q-Q plots.
This provided me with a visual cue of a potential power-law distribution
(at least, that's what I am boldly thinking).
So I went ahead and performed the procedure as suggested by Clauset,
Shalizi, and Newman (2007/09), by reusing the essentials found in
http://tuvalu.santafe.edu/~aaronc/powerlaws/plfit.r.
I obtained and tested the following fitting estimates based on dat1:
xmin <- 0.01715686
alpha <- 2.381581
I then simply wanted to print the observed and fitted dists in one plot,
so I ran:
library(ggplot2)
library(VGAM)
dat2 <- rpareto(length(dat1), loc...

Fast lookup in ragged array
Hello,
I'm running an algorithm for graph structural cohesion that requires
a depth-first search of subgraphs of a rather large network. The
algorithm will necessarily be redundant in the subgraphs it recurses
to, so to speed up the process I implemented a check at each subgraph
to see if it's been searched already.
This algorithm is very slow, and takes days to complete on a

Problem getting R's decision tree for Quinlan's golf example data
Newbie question, but I've checked archives etc. Am trying to reproduce
in R Quinlan's trivial example of the "golf" decision tree. The data file
of 14 examples follows (read in via read.table()):
Outlook Temperature Humidity Windy PlayDontPlay
1 sunny 85 85 false DontPlay
2 sunny 80 90 true DontPlay
3 overcast 83 78 false Play
4 rain 70 96 false Play

ks.test gets stuck (PR#2571)
Full_Name: Michael Lachmann
Version: 1.6.1
OS: linux
Submission from: (NULL) (194.95.185.57)
ks.test enters an endless loop with repeated data. (The test is not designed for
such data, but it shouldn't get stuck...)
example:
ks.test(rep(1,3),rep(1,1))
never stops.

DLL modules with other dependent libraries
Hi all,
In R for Windows, is there a preferred way to handle R extensions that
provide native code that depend upon one or more third party DLLs? If I
put those DLLs in the library/MODULE/libs it doesn't find them. In
other words, my MODULE.dll has other DLLs it uses, but they aren't
standard and it would be unlikely to find them in the system path.
Thanks for any suggestions!

-std=c99 and inline semantics
Hi,
I noticed that with the GCC trunk (4.3.0), the semantics of "extern
inline" have reversed.
The net result is that R will build without the usual-stdc=gnu99 but it
won't with it.
Many multiple definitions result otherwise.

it's the one that says: Windows: V6 Beta SMP2/CPU clients

bug report: errors in file transfer
Hi!
I just encountered a serious problem with rsync.
I used rsync to copy a big directory between two computers. The source
machine was a sun, the destination was a linux box. The destination
directory did not exist before the copy started.
I used the following command to copy the directory over:
rsync -aSz source_machine:projects/ projects2
because I was somewhat paranoid, I checked if all
