Samba not announcing the correct IP address to a Windows NT Wins server
...ld be nice to know how we could get those
systems to automatically announce themselves correctly.
The nsswitch.conf file for these machines uses files first (local host
table) then dns
The primary IP addresses for these systems is in the local host table as are
the hostnames for the 2nd NICs (i.e. samiam .vs. private-samiam)
I think the samba "name resolve order" setting of "host wins bcast" means
that I use the UNIX nameservice lookup first (as defined by nsswitch.conf),
then ask the wins server, then broadcast for the information. I've told
samba who the wins server is...

Constructing bar charts with standard error bars
I am new to R.
I want to graph group data using a "Traditional Bar Chart with Standard
Error Bar", like the kind shown here:
http://samiam.colorado.edu/~mcclella/ftep/twoGroups/twoGroupGraphs.html
Is there a simple way to do this?
So far, I have only figured out how to plot the bars using barplot.
testdata <- scan(, list(group=0,xbar=0,se=0))

RedHat broke termcap on the 4.2 libtermcap security upgrade
RedHat broke termcap on the 4.2 libtermcap security upgrade.
Until RedHat gets a chance to fix it, fixed RPMS are here:

(Who is just glad that RedHat continues to keep RedHat 4.2 current with
security, even though it is an older distribution. In fact, their
support is the best support I have seen for a legacy distro)

SSH security hole found
>From http://lwn.net/#security
A vulnerability present in the SSH software package can allow an
attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the SSH server. To protect
against this, immediately upgrade to ssh 1.2.25. Red Hat ssh-1.2.25 RPMs
are available, as is the Debian ssh-1.1.25 package for hamm (Debian
2.0-to-be).
There are SSH 1.2.25 RPMs here:

Services not required?
I''m in the process of locking down as much of my systems here
as possible as to available ports. I am down to only a handful
but am not sure how much of a security risk they pose and was
wondering if anyone here might be able to comment, or suggest
secure versions to run:
21/FTP (WU-ftpd v2.4.2 BETA 14)
22/SSH (1.22)
23/TELNET (Netkit 0.09)

"Flavors of Security Through Obscurity"
This was posted not too long ago on sci.crypt... Enjoy... I think the most
relevant information is near the top, but it''s all quite good... :-)

There is no intrinsic difference between algorithm and data, the
same information can be viewed as data in one context and as
algorithm in another. Why then do so many people claim that

Perl script to locate F0 0F C7 C8 bombs
There is no known fix to the F0 0F C7 C8 bug at this time. What can be
done, however, is run a program, such as the script after my signature, to
locate any and all such programs. This script can be used in single
user mode after a mysterious lockup on a multiuser Pentium system.
I hope it is possible to come up with a software fix for this problem.
