Samba, SamFS and problems with large files (backup images)
Hello, we use Samba on a Solaris server with SamFS and a tape library for having access to the SamFS for Windows users. We used Norton Ghost to create backup images of our workstations and sent them via network to the Solaris server. Restoring these images often failed because of "corrupted" image files. We thought Norton Ghost might...

sam-fs on zfs-pool
Hi list, I''ve did some tests and run into a very strange situation.. I created a zvol using "zfs create -V" and initialize an sam-filesystem on this zvol. After that I restored some testdata using a dump from another system. So far so good. After some big troubles I found out that releasing files in the sam-filesystem doesn''t create space on the underlying zvol.

Lustre Solution Delivery
What is the process for integrating a Lustre+SAMFS solution into an existing customer environment. The plan is to have CRS build the Lustre component, but Lustre and SAMFS will need to configured and integrated into the customer computing environment. I am very familiar with the SAMFS integration, but not Lustre integration. Do we have re...

Problems joining a domain with a large number of DCs
...'m having issues joining samba to a domain with a large number of domain controllers. The domain is a mixed windows 2003/windows 2008 domain. The samba server is Solaris 10 update 5 running on SPARC. I have a custom samba build of samba 3.0.28 on the server because we need Tobi Oetiker's samfs patch. Because of the issue that version has with passwords longer than eight characters on Solaris, I've also build samba 3.0.24 for using net to join the domain. Using net from 3.0.24, I'm able to join the domain in the customary net ads join -U user@DOMAIN.COM way. A windows admin con...

Status of DTrace NFSv3/v4 client providers
We recently had a strange NFS performance anomaly between a V880 running snv_124 and two NetApp filers. To investigate, a DTrace NFSv4 (and eventually NFSv3) client provider would been extremely helpful. Unfortunately, all I could find were a request for code review of a v3 client provider and another request for help developing a v4 provider. Nothing seems to have come from those initiatives,

DTrace provider for NFS
FYI, I posted a blog a few days ago about a DTrace provider for NFS that is currently in development: http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/samf?entry=a_dtrace_provider_for_nfs Let''s discuss any questions, comments, etc. here. I also advertised this on nfs-discuss at opensolaris.org. Naturally, I would expect the discussion here to be more on the specifics of DTrace, and the

Problem delivering files
Hello samba people I do not know if it is a bug, but a problem indeed: we have a Sun running solaris 2.7 samba 2.0.6) and NT clients AND a HSM Filesystem called samfs. This keeps data on tapes, and 16kB on disk. A client request a file can leed into grabbing a tape and bring back the data online to disk. 1) NFS Client waits for data until it's coming, even 1 day 2) (NT)/smbclient gets 16k which are allready online then get 3 times receive_smb: length...

About smbfs: smb_get_length error
Hi All: When I use samfs, sometimes I got the following messages, Mr. Google says this is because the windows client use the share, and the connection is "reconnected"! Does it right? How to ward off the error? Is there any potential problem if I ignore it? My actions are smbmount and smbumount some shares. So...

what files are being used from a NFS server perspective
I''m curious to know what files are being used from a NFS server perspective. I''m unable to trace the client because it is in the boot phase. Looking at the io provider, I believe it does not allow you to look at what files are being requested. That would lead me to the fbt provider. Does anyone know what fbt provides the file handle for NFS client request on the NFS

XFS tree quota and samba free space report
greetings, does anyone know, if it is possible to propagate somehow the XFS "directory tree quota" status to SMB workstation client free space report? currently the client sees total free space of share's partition (instead of tree quota free space). when the tree quota limit is reached, the write attempts fail, but free space report shows enough space, so this is confusing. tdb locking issue - Solaris 10 and Samba 3.0.33
(Yes, I should upgrade Samba to 3.0.35). We're running the Sun provided Samba daemon (SUNWsmbau and friends) on Solaris 10 Generic_138888-08 (sparc). Lots of Windows clients (mixed XP, 2003, 2008) hit this server and periodically we'll start seeing smbd processes begin piling up. These processes can't be killed with a normal kill -- only kill -9 will do the trick. In the past

Mac .DS_Stores
Hi all. We have a file server using samba with a lot of Mac clients. Mac uses files called .DS_Store to store information about the layout of the files in the directory. We have a hierarchal storage system, and don't want to back up the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of .DS_store files. Currently we have a policy in place that these files don't get backed up, but they

Mirror and RaidZ on only 3 disks
Hi, I have a small Linux server PC at home (Intel Core2 Q9300, 4 GB RAM), and I''m seriously considering switching to OpenSolaris (Indiana, 2008.11) in the near future, mainly because of ZFS. The idea is to run the existing CentOS 4.7 system inside a VM and let it NFS mount home directories and other filesystems from OpenSolaris. I might migrate more services from Linux over time, but for

[RFC] btrfs auto snapshot
...espectively Later: -integration with (a ?) backup software - snapshot trashing per backup confirmation - rollback from the backup server Challenges: - rollback per file or dir instead of entire snapshot-rollback ? - integrating into the btrfs gui ? - some FS (samfs) support continues backup - do we need a new role for the snapshot management ? zfs does. - we don''t need a snapshot if the master file-system didn''t change at all - snapshots are writable by default, hope that sudo-er doesn''t modify the snapshot -...

gzip compression throttles system?
I just had a quick play with gzip compression on a filesystem and the result was the machine grinding to a halt while copying some large (.wav) files to it from another filesystem in the same pool. The system became very unresponsive, taking several seconds to echo keystrokes. The box is a maxed out AMD QuadFX, so it should have plenty of grunt for this. Comments? Ian

Yager on ZFS
Not sure if it''s been posted yet, my email is currently down... http://weblog.infoworld.com/yager/archives/2007/10/suns_zfs_is_clo.html Interesting piece. This is the second post from Yager that shows solaris in a pretty good light. I particularly like his closing comment: "If you haven''t checked out ZFS yet, do, because it will eventually become ubiquitously implemented
