Samba3 - small lan [1]
Hi, I have posted to this list once before without any reply. It would be nice if some reply could indicate why the posting was not appropriate and some indication as to what one should do - the last time I included my smbconf. This time I have reworked my questions, limited their scope , and put them in two emails. I have two essentially identical linux computers [east and west] both running

Heimdal Version Question
We would like to build a SuSE Professional 8.2 box as a Domain Member Server in a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain, and we are referencing Chapter 9.3.3 of Samba3-By-Example. The version of heimdal supplied with SuSE 8.2 is 0.4e. S3BE references heimdal version 0.6 plus patches. Since SuSE often backports fixes from later versions of products into older versions, the question is: will the 0.4e heimdal rpms supplied with SuSE 8.2 work with Samba 3.0.7 in this configuration? TIA, Mark -- _____________________________________...

Samba 3.0.7, SuSE 8.2 and Heimdal Compile Problem
Trying to follow Chapter 9.3.3 of S3BE to create a SuSE 8.2 Active Directory domain member server. 9.3.3 says heimdal >= .6 is required. I installed the Sernet packages and saw 0.6.2 source is included. Running ./configure after unpacking the heimdal source completes OK, but running make results in the following errors: creatin...

Samba3 By Example - Suggested Update (Correction?) And Two Winbind Defects
...DNS configuration errors. Next, we undid all of the above changes, and simply edited the krb5.conf file to include the realm information and the IP:port info for the AD server. The join was successful now. May I therefore suggest that configuring the krb5.conf file be added to Chapter 9.3.3 in S3BE? Separately, we found two winbind errors during testing: First, we found that winbind does not shut down cleanly during a reboot (we used the SuSE runlevel editor in YaST to have smb, nmb and winbind startup automagically during boot up). Winbind leaves /var/run/samba/winbindd.pid in place, wh...

small lan - novice
Hi, John, thanks for replying. I am fully aware that this is a volunteer effort and do appreciate it very much. I really didn't expect an automatic answer - I was suggesting an automatic response which could indicate the objection[s]? I have downloaded the S3be `book' and ordered it from amazon. I was puzzled by your comment: `Please do not refer to smbfs's friends as Samba. The tools smbmount, smbumount, et al. are really part of the smbfs kernel driver package. The user-space tools are shipped with Samba because they use common librarie...

"printer admin" still working in 3.0.21c?
...perties afterwards which always ends up with "access denied", although the AD account used to connect is listed in "[global] printer admin =". I noticed that "printer admin" is marked deprecated in 3.0.21c, but isn't it still supposed to work? FWIW, TOSHARG and S3bE still suggest "printer admin" at various places. I still have to find my way through the samba logs and Ethereal traces, but would be grateful for any advice in the meantime. Here's the log.smbd snippet that *seems* to be the culprit: [2006/02/27 18:21:24, 5] rpc_server/srv_spool...

Samba 3.0.21b winbind crash
...on a Domain Member Server in ADS mode with winbind against W2K3 SP1 AD servers and idmap uids/gids stored in a central OpenLDAP directory. Unfortunately, winbind gives me a hard time and reproducibly dies with a PANIC on a "wbinfo -g", although I think I've followed TOSHARG's and S3bE's advices and have used it successfully in similar environments (although not with 3.0.21b) in the past. Can anyone shed some light on this? Below please find my smb.conf and level 10 log.winbindd (both slightly obfuscated to protect the innocent, but not mangled in any other way). I can provid...

Strange Samba Problem
Running SuSE 9.2. This problem happens with both the SuSE-supplied Samba on the DVD, as well as the SuSE update rpms to 3.0.9. We even removed all the *.tdb files and recreated the installation from scratch, as always carefully following the steps in S3BE. FWIW, this same config worked previously on this and earlier systems; we did not change anything on this system (other than applying YOU patches), and since we fire the Windows VM infrequently, we can't correlate when this problem started with any specific YOU patches.. Basically, we use S...

Perhaps the Samba team would consider including this info in the S3BE documentation? With best regards to all, Mark -- ___________________________________________________________ A Message From... L.
