Yum install preferred arch only
I have a couple 64-bit CentOS 5 installations here and was wondering if
there was a yum option to have it install only x86_64 arch by default
if no arch is specified.
I tired of having to append .x86_64 on all package names I only want
the x86_64 versions of, if I want the i386 versions too I would add
the .i386 package to the list...
Thanks All,

Way to mark record as main?
I was curious if there was a built in feature in ActiveRecord or a
plugin, but I basically have a database for phone numbers. I want a user
to be able to make a phone number as main. There can only be one phone
number marked as main at all times. Is there something for this?
Thanks for your help.

Where is the blktrace utility?
I keep reading that RHEL/CentOS 5 supports blktrace, but I can't seem
to find the blktrace/blkparse utilities.
Is it that just the functionality is available in the kernel, but the
user is left to have to hunt down the latest versions of the utilities
on the net?
If anybody knows where to get the latest versions of these utilities
I would greatly appreciate it.

Model: self is not child's parent
Assume a model Parent and another model Child. Child belongs_to Parent
and Parent has_many Children. The following fails:
@
p = Parent.find(:first)
assert p.equal?(p.children[0].parent)
@
It seems odd to me that I and my child''s parent are not the same object.
In fact, this is royally screwing me up. Can anyone tell me why this is

Slightly OT: Extra icons on desktop
I'm running FC8 with Gnome 2.20.0 at work and I have this interesting situation.
I have two disks on the system that are both configured to be mounted
in /etc/fstab, but I'm seeing two things I believe are strange.
One is that the second drive is not getting mounted at boot time.
The other is that I see two icons for the disk on my desktop - one

Ruby on Rails and MS Access
How do I connect an existing or new Access database with Ruby on
Rails?
I am new to Ruby on Rails and a tutorial I am going through mentions
using MySQL but I don''t have MySQL and only work with MS Access.
Is MySQL available for free on the web? Thanks.

What is the REAL version of Xen in 5.1?
I have a 5.1 system with Xen installed. The package says 3.0.3, but an 'xm info' shows 3.1.
So what is it? Is it 3.0.3 patched to 3.1 or is it 3.1 packaged as 3.0.3? And if it's the former, does anybody have any idea why upstream wouldn't just deploy 3.1 (now 3.1.2) which is more stable?

Kernel debug info?
Ok, I got blktrace installed, but I also have some blktrace
system taps that I want to test out, but it seems I need to
have the kernel debug info installed to get systemtap
working.
Anyone know where the CentOS kernel-debuginfo RPMs are
located?

Counter cache like plugin for sum
Hi list,
Is there a plugin similar to counter_cache except for caching sums
instead of counts? The reason I ask is for performance and convenience
for reporting.

system gets suspended automatically!
Hello!
I am running CentOS-5 with latest kernel available by deault (2.6.23).
I installed it on a Dell XPS machine having Intel Quad processors (4
parallel cpus). I use it to run a computational program and I need to
keep the program running for 1-2 months continuously. I generally boot
it in runlevel-3 with network ON without X and use ssh from another
machine to connect and run the program

Use of uniqueidentifer type for primary key?
I''m working on a legacy SQL db. It is distributed, to they are using
the uniqueidentifier type for the primary key.
At first, at least, I won''t be updating records, but I''m seeing a lot
of negativity about using anything other than incrementing integers
for the pk--which are obviously inadequate for this environment.
It is enough to use set_primary_key? Do I need

SMB Shares with subversion backing store
To all,
I was wondering if it was possible to setup samba shares that use subversion as a backing store for the files.
Whenever a new file is created it is added to the subversion tree, whenever a file is opened it is checked out of the subversion tree, and whenever it is deleted it is removed from the subversion tree.
The idea is that one could use subversion to retain previous versions of

Dual boot box: WinXP & CentOS 5: Impossible torestoreWinXP?
I wouldn't necessarily wipe the whole HD, just the windows partition.
You could also use Xen in CentOS 5 for your Windows virtualization. I'd wait for 5.1 though which will be more refined then version 5.
I've been thinking of setting up a Xen machine of my own with a Windows HVM and a couple of Linux PVMs with their GUIs/consoles pinned to different virtual consoles. It has always

building a Xen guest image on straight LVM partitions?
Hello,
When I needed to build Xen guests under Debian I could follow more or
less the instructions in http://preview.tinyurl.com/2oc48r and the
advantage of this approach is that it allows me to setup the Xen guest
directly on the LVM partition without making it consider the LVM
partition as an entire disk with a partition table.
The advantages of this approach are:
1. I can add more LVM's
