X-Windows Login
I have a server with all the x-windows stuff installed. But it's
giving me a text based login prompt on the console.
I can log onto the console, and run
gnome-session
and GNOME comes up fine. How do I turn it on so that I get a X-Window
GUI login prompt?

How to get usb storage under /media in runlevel 3?
Hello
I have previously used Centos 4.x in runlevel 3, when I plug in my usb
storage device/cd in cd-rom, it is shown under /media, for example
/media/MyUsbStick.
Now in Centos 5.2, when I insert usb storage device, nothing is shown
under /media (runlevel 3). When I have runlevel 5 and X running, usb
stick / cdrom is automounted fine.
I can mount...

tools/hotplug: remove 4 from default runlevel in xen-watchdog, xend and xendomains
Similar to what changeset 24847:0900b1c905f1 does in xencommons, remove
runlevel 4 from the other runlevel scripts. LSB defines runlevel 4 as
reserved for local use, the local sysadmin is responsible for symlink
creation in rc4.d.
Runlevel 4 was specified in D...

Opensuse 10.3 does not charge dom0
I decided to upgrade from openSuse 10.2 to openSuse 10.3. I installed xen things, but when I boot using xen option the system is blocked. It appears the green window, with little suse logo in the middle, and mouse cursor, but the system crashes.
My computer is a Pentium 4 1,5 GHz, 512 MB of RAM.
I attached "diff boot.msg boot.omsg" (as diff opensuse-normal-kernel opensuse-xen-kernel)

ubuntu 11.10, system V runlevel compatability
I''m having a problem with the boot sequence hanging indefinitely at "stopping system V runlevel compatibility". Here are the steps I took to get to this point:
1) installed a single boot, server version of ubuntu 11.10 (intended to be dom0)
2) apt-get install xen-hypervisor-4.1-amd64 xen-utils-4.1 xenwatch xen-tools xen-utils-common xenstore-utils

Thanks for drawing my attention to that bug. I encountered it the other
day after switching from runlevel 5 to 3 (and back again) on a CentOS
6.6 machine.
The purpose of the runlevel switch was to restart gdm. Is there a better
way?

rh7.2 starts wine in runlevel 3!
installing the wine rpm that comes with red hat 7.2
works -- unless you switch to runlevel 3! Then the
wine startup script runs, and fails.
Since wine depends on X, it should only run in
runlevel 5!

Running ices on startup
...hat goes on in the room with the server
This works more or less fine, with one catch: icecast starts when I start the server, but ices doesn't. I have to start ices manually. This is unpleasant at least, so I would like to start ices on server startup. I already tried entering icecast into the runlevel manager and wrote a script to start it. What happens, is this:
Ices starts, if I run the script manually through the runlevel manager (runlevel manager reports success, and I hear sound), but after a bootup, no sound, although the runlevel manager still tells me ices is running. I can then still st...

Launching X-Windows at different runelvels
Hi all,
I need to launch X-Windows at runlevel 4 and 5. CentOS only start up x-windows
at runlevel by default. I have modified /etc/inittab to accomplish this:
x:4:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
But this returns errors every time that start and stop system ... Which is the
correct form to launch x-...

Since CentOS 6 uses Upstart as its init system, and GDM is run from an
Upstart service (and not a SysV init script), you can use the upstart

Serial console
...starting this up for me somehow? It says 19200 when everything I have
read says it should be 115200. How do I change this? Some docs say I should
create my own /etc/init/serial-ttyS1.conf containing:
# For IPMI serial console
# ttyS1 - agetty
#
# This service maintains a agetty on ttyS1.
stop on runlevel [S016]
start on runlevel [23]
respawn
exec agetty -h -L -w /dev/ttyS1 115200 vt102
but when I do that I end up with two gettys, presumably fighting over the
serial port, and the original is apparently holding onto it because I still
can't connect and get a login prompt.
# ps -ef |grep agetty...
