2013 Rails Rumble Gem Teardown
Hi guys. I just finished writing up my analysis of the gems used in the 2013 Rails Rumble: http://www.dwellable.com/blog/Rails-Rumble-Gem-Teardown The Rails Rumble organizers were kind enough to let me look at the Gemfiles submitted by 221 teams. I spent a couple of days digging into the data. I was able to answer questions like: - Are people turning off turbolinks? - Haml vs. Slim - fight!

Invitation to try Unhatched on Rails Rumble
Hey all, I wanted to invite you to try out our Rails Rumble entry: Unhatched (http://vote.railsrumble.com/teams/95/visit) Unhatched is a place to keep track of all those business ideas that you always have but forget to write down. A unique part of our site is that the whole thing is hand illustrated by Gino Barzizza, one of NYC''s up and coming artists. We met all our goals for the

Rails Rumble: What can you build in Rails in only 48 hours?
In a similar vein to Rails Day of the years past, I''m happy to announce the Rails Rumble. It''ll be taking place September 8-9, 2007. Unlike Rails Day, this event will span 48 hours and will also be judged by the public. We''d love to know what you think about the contest. Please take a look at http://railsrumble.com. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~

OT: Caching synchronous writes
...#39;s for ZIL (intent log or write cache). The ZIL lets us use synchronous writes (safer) without the normal delay. Were we to try and get the same level of performance with Linux, we'd need to use async mode for our NFS shares -- and we'd lose some reliability. However, given the latest rumblings and ruminations about Oracle potentially no longer selling entitlements for Solaris 10 on non-Sun hardware -- and then turning around and no longer allowing you to run Solaris 10 "freely", we're left with either OpenSolaris or looking at Linux again (we run Solaris 10 on Silicon Mecha...

Beta4 artifact/bug in the bass area
Hi! Today, I found an encoding bug with a new tune by me. http://www.uni-karlsruhe.de/~us87/ogg/vorbis_bassrumble_demo.rar (2.1MB) contains the original .WAV in 16bit/44.1kHz and an .OGG encoded at 350kbit/s. I found the bug when listening to the 128kbit/s version, but encoding it with that high bitrate didn't change a thing. The deep bassdrum contains a rumbling, knocking sound (the first

Speeding up Prototype''s $$ Selector
Just a quick heads up that Sylvain Zimmer has posted a performance upgrade for Prototype''s $$ selector, making the function up to 20 times faster. This could be just the thing I''ve been looking for recently as a site I''m currently developing makes heavy usage of that $$ selector and I have noticed that this can lead to a noticeable lag on page load. Upgrade from Altigen
Hi Everyone. I have a client that uses an Altigen system. I am really new to PBX systems so all this is totally foreign to me. They currently have 5 inbound trunk lines and about 20 analog phones. >From what I can gather they are using the Altigen Quantum cards that support 8 extensions and 4 trunks. >From what I can gather the solution is a TDM04B and TDM01B to bring in the lines from

Fwd: Asterisk on Solaris 10 (AMD Opteron, Sun Fire X2100)
...seems to have been missed, though -- is there any way to run a complete Asterisk solution on Solaris 10 (including music-on-hold and conferencing)? This probably comes down to a few issues: - Is ztdummy (a component of Zaptel) *really* required for MoH and conferencing support? - I've heard rumblings about "zaprtc" being a potential replacement. Is it a *real* replacement? Will it work on Solaris 10? If not, what will? - I *know* people have got to be running Asterisk on Solaris 10 (but I don't know who they are, unfortunately!). If you happen to be a member of that esteemed cl...

snooping - the crux of the problem
I have a computer with two interfaces, say with addresses 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2. I want to set up routing such that when I ping 192.168.1.1 it goes out through 192.168.1.2 and not to the local interface. Is this possible - all my attempts so far have been unsuccessful? If so, pointers, etc. would be gratefully appreciated. Jim -- Jim Redman (505) 662 5156 x85

Formats other than Vorbis in Ogg
...sh. Many people, when posting audio samples, include the Vorbis file (of course) and then a wave file. Then other users tell them to put into flac format, to save space. Why couldn't flac be integrated into Ogg? Since Ogg Squish is dead, what about Ogg Flac? In fact, i seem to remember rumblings about this a long time ago. From what I understand, most of the work right now with Vorbis is going into fine tuning the lossy compression codec so that it sounds the best it can. All the bitstream formatting and fucntional details are pretty much solid and in a production state. Doesn'...

fixme:commdlg:GetFileName95 Flags 0x00000002 not yet implemented
Greetings! I am attempting to run Groove Mechanic ( http://www.coyotes.bc.ca ) under wine. It is able to get past the licence check and record from the sound card. But when I attempt to open a WAV file to process I get the error message: fixme:commdlg:GetFileName95 Flags 0x00000002 not yet implemented and the program hangs with focus switching between the GM window and the file browser window
