Improving TAILS, WAS: Module Versioning
...slinux missing and completely unavailable. This scenario emphasizes the challenges of compatibility, regardless of version-detail-helpers 3. If you remove all binaries and leave only configuration-files, then install your favourite version of Syslinux (which you keep packaged with Rufus) to the USB, then fit the config-files into place, what are the disadvantages? If one of the answers is "the CD version could be a customized Syslinux," then the worst-case argument against supporting it is #1, above 1. You'd mentioned "the application size woul...

Improving TAILS, WAS: Module Versioning
...don't think it's an insurmountable obstacle. If needed, I can probably create an ldlinux.sys that integrates a modified module, so that it bypasses the existing one from the ISO, and make that available for download. And of course, as soon as it's on my server, existing versions of Rufus will just work with the ISO. I also already maintain a version of ldlinux.c32 on my server, besides ldlinux.sys (as Rufus does provide the ability to install a "bare" Syslinux, in which case we download that one module), so I could very easily modify the process to download/replace al...

Problems with no method error with rufus scheduler
Hi, I have a problem with rufus. I created a test.rb file in the /config/ initializers folder. test.rb require ''rubygems'' require ''rufus/scheduler'' scheduler = Rufus::Scheduler.start_new scheduler.each ''10s'' do puts "hey see you in 10seconds!" end...

Well, I didn't really want to mention it, because it's going to be more of a rant that anything else, but since this is being brought up, versioning detection and handling has very much been an issue for me in Rufus. As I mentioned in the summary of the patches I submitted recently, 6.03 pre has actually been a nightmare in that respect. First, let me give you a quick breakdown of how Rufus handles ISO -> USB conversion of Syslinux. Before the 5.x series, the .c32's were mostly compatible with any...

Determine from which device syslinux booted from
Renato, I don't think it would take that long to make a little script that even an XP user could use to generate GPT formatted thumb-drives. I believe someone made the Rufus utility for just such an occasion Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus Create bootable USB drives the easy way Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, me...

USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
...this exact drive from an official MS Win7 CD not very long ago. Separately, having failed, utterly, to get anywhere when I tried to use GParted to both (1) install an MBR record and to (2) create the one FAT32 partition that we need, I decided to back up and try again to use your recommended tool, RUFUS, instead, and see how far I could get with that. The results were enlightening. I asked RUFUS to create for me a USB stick which was bootable and which contained FreeDOS. It obliged me. I subsequently took the resulting USB stick and tried to boot it on both my laptop and my small HTPC system....

Determine from which device syslinux booted from
Unfortunately I can't use GPT partitions because the usb stick are created by non-technical users and lots of them are still using xp 32 bits. Merging isolinux.bin and ldlinux.bin for Rufus
...e who are too stupid to anticipate their ISOs being converted to PXELINUX? Do we tack on PXELINUX stuff to isolinux.bin? There have been _plenty_ of times when I wanted a simple way to go from ISO to PXE. Unfortunately, few tools that I've found cover that scenario as well as Rufus covers the ISO -> disk scenario. 3. In your experience, are people picky about which .c32 modules they include, or do they just dump the whole lot in? I ask because perhaps we could sneak ldlinux.bin into a .c32 module, which would [thankfully] leave isolinux.bin alone. Such a...

As I mentioned, I've seen reports of ISOHybrids that didn't boot in DD mode, but that seemed to work using the Rufus process. And you will always be limited by what the "automated process" that is the ISOHybrid algorithm can do (which can of course be modified by a developer, but so can Rufus' automated process). > While for iso to usb conversion with Rufus non-tech savvy users rely on > t...

Make USB bootable drive: Rufus
Had seen various folks ask about how to do this (I did mine long ago and far away to make my Windows machine dual-bootable to Win or CentOS) and while looking for some HD repair diagnostics, ran across this and thought it may be useful to some folks. http://rufus.akeo.ie/ I've not yet used it, but it looks easy. YMMV, of course, as may mine! :-) Bill
