write RPC & congestion
Hi, thanks for previous help.
I have some question about Lustre RPC and the sequence of events that
occur during large concurrent write() involving many processes and large
data size per process. I understand there is a mechanism of flow
control by credits, but I''m a little unclear on how it works in general
after reading the "networking & io protocol" white paper.

IPv4-only networks via IPv6-only network
Hello all,
I would like to connect two IPv4-only networks through global IPv6-only
network with tinc.
Could anyone tell me how to configure tinc.conf and the other config files?
Thanks in advance,

...rnal time source, first stratum 2/3 sources, then stratum 1

In a clustered server environment, _always_ run a local physical
box/router ntpd
server (preferably two) that queries a set of external sources, and
services
your internal machine queries. With RTTs all on your LAN, and using the
same
internal time sources for every query, this clock drift issue should be
eliminated. Obviously, when you first set this up, stop ntpd and run
ntpdate to
get an initial time sync for each cluster host.
If after setting this up, and we're dealing with bare met...

Prelim results: hpnssh v ssh in local area networks
The results, for anyone interested, can be found here
http://www.psc.edu/networking/projects/hpn-ssh/results.html
Long story short, there doesn't seem to be any notable difference
between the two anymore. I still have a few more test combinations to
run (<.5ms rtts and against cygwin) so the conclusions might change but,
at this point, I'm no longer seeing any sort of performance hit (as a
measure of throughput) for hpnssh in local area networks.
Raw data, test script, and stats script available for those interested.

Dotlock dovecot-uidlist errors / NFS / High Load
As of late our four node dovecot 1.2.13 cluster has been experiencing a
massive number of these dotlock errors:
Created dotlock file's timestamp is different than current time
(1295480202 vs 1295479784): /mail/user/Maildir/dovecot-uidlist
These dotlock errors correspond with very high load averages, and
eventually we have to turn off all but one server to stop them from
occurring. We first

Problems with the rsync command line syntax for multiple files
I feel completely stupid for asking this question, but I have an
essential problem of getting the syntax right for synchronizing
multiple files. I am trying to use rsync to synchronize files
generated in one directory with our public directory our web server.
We have a number of files with the extension html so I have tried the
following command line:

Very weird network behaviour with 4.7-RELEASE-p10 (large)
Hi,
I have been doing some tests using hping2 and TCP SYN
pings targeting local and remote hosts from two FreeBSD
4.7-RELEASE-p10 and one Linux 2.4.18 host.
The three machines have the same hardware configuration
and have been running for 6 months now. The average load
isnt too high (usually 0.01 to 0.15) on the FreeBSD machines.
Here is the output from hping2 (excuse me the line wrap),

Redundant internet connections.
(I know that what I''m wanting to do can be done, but for some reason I
can not get it to work for the life of me. I think I have been staring
at it too long and too closely.)
I have two different internet connections from two cooperating ISPs. I
also have a small 8 block of IPs that are globally routable that both
ISPs will route to me via my world facing globally routable IPs that

DTrace provider for NFS
FYI, I posted a blog a few days ago about a DTrace provider for NFS
that is currently in
development:

Let''s discuss any questions, comments, etc. here. I also advertised
this on
nfs-discuss at opensolaris.org. Naturally, I would expect the
discussion here to
be more on the specifics of DTrace, and the

TCP window based shaping
Does anyone have any pointers on how other people have implemented tcp
window adjustment to do bandwidth shaping?
Granted the basic idea is to set the window size to be RTT * bandwidth,
but a quick squiz at google turns up mostly papers on how to implement
this at the sender end with a view to some new magic TCP
implementation. I''m really interested in notes on how to implement at
