Missing /etc/log/rpmpkgs
On one system I am missing /etc/log/rpmpkgs I believe that this file is updated by some cron job, and maybe I just have not had this system powered up at the right time for the job to run. Though I had thought that if a job was scheduled for a time the computer was off, it would run sometime soon (with some definition of 'soon'...

Anacron IS installed it is just that....
You have to have a system running for more than 65 minutes for it to run the daily cron jobs. And if this is a test system that you keep rebooting. Well. So if I want /var/log/rpmpkgs to get updated, I have to wait until the next day an keep the system up for a bit more than 65 minutes. Actually a quite reasonable requirement. Add this to my 'book': cron is your friend. Anacron is a better friend on a desktop linux system. And I suspect that nightly suspends will...

samba & samba-common installed then erased, but by whom?
...samba ---------------------- yum End ------------------------- No one, including myself, has even logged into this box in the past few days (verified by asking the only other two people who have access and also looking at the last & secure logs). And neither /var/log/yum.log or /var/log/rpmpkgs shows samba at all being installed/erased/present. I ran both chkrootkit and rkhunter, and both turned up clean. Since this box is behind a firewall with only a few IPs given access to it, I'm thinking that it's not been rooted, but I can't seem to find any other explanation for th...

Recover rpm DB corrupted by disk failure?
Over the weekend my workstation (still on CentOS 3) started showing SMART errors, so we shut it down and moved everything onto a new drive. On reboot, the RPM database reports as corrupted and "rpm --rebuilddb" segmentation faults. Is there any reasonable way to recover from this, short of a complete reinstall? The machine is otherwise up though it''s quite likely some files

libxml2 RPM via yum?
Hi All, I can't find anything via yum for libxml2. I also, for some reason, can't get to the source page for libxml2 here, http://xmlsoft.org/sources/libxml2/ Is there not an RPM via yum for this? Need it for a dependency for installing PHP from source, which I need to do, for certain reasons. Cheers. Mark.

Gnome Bluetooth Manager
I installed: gnome-bluetooth.i386 0.7.0-10.2.el5 from the base repo It also installed (at least): gnome-bluetooth-libs.i386 0.7.0-10.2.el5 These show up in /var/log/yum.log interestingly they do not show up in /var/log/rpmpkgs My bluetooth mouse is now working. It was not before. But I do not see any bluetooth management stuff in gnome (http://live.gnome.org/BluetoothManager) What gives? Did I forget a step? The following bluetooth related rpms area also installed: in rpmpkgs: bluez-gnome-0.5-5.fc6.i386.rpm blu...

yum updated to 3.3, rpmdb corrupted
...y hosed. Unfortunately, I didn't save the error that occured at the time because a rpm --rebuilddb _appeared_ to fix the problem. Unfortunately I found out later that I was left with a db that only contained a subset of the actual install base. I'm now trying to recover from the /var/log/rpmpkgs file. Later I will be adding /var/lib/rpm to my backups.... Like I said, its probably my machine (its old and naff), but I just thought I'd share :) -- Tom Seeley ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program...

Random files in homedir gets deleted
On one of my systems I seem to loose a file or two from time to time. Last night, one of my files (/home/online/sh/NattjobbPrivat.sh) was deleted/removed/vanished. Another time it was /home/online/sh/daemon that was deleted. But I can't seem to find anything strange in the logs or in the history, nor would any of my scripts running in crontab mess with those files. Where can I look for

Fedora samba and ldap (resend)
I am currently using the Fedora Open directory with a posix structure user information to authenticate several hundred Mac users. Currently this is being done using the netatalk package for userId, UID, GID, password, home directory. What I am looking for is a way to move from netatalk to Samba without losing my LDAP capabilities. I have seen several post related to doing this but none

Acrobat Reader broken on CentOS 4.3
I have had Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.1 installed on my CentOS 4.2 desktop and it worked fine. After upgrading to 4.3, I can't get it to come up anymore. I downloaded Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 and it does the same. I'd appreciate any suggestions on what to look for, since the executable and the startup scripts are not giving me any useful errors to chase. -- Ron Loftin

When is update 3 coming out?
...n i ask is that i applied the openoffice.org 2.0.1-1 rpms and now WINE is not playing so nicely. It may be a good time to re-wipe the system and reinstall update 3 from fresh ISO's. some of these "goodies" from upstream can eat the cheese in your house. $ grep openoffice.org /var/log/rpmpkgs openoffice.org-1.1.2-28.6.0.EL4.i386.rpm openoffice.org-base-2.0.1-1.i586.rpm openoffice.org-calc-2.0.1-1.i586.rpm openoffice.org-core01-2.0.1-1.i586.rpm openoffice.org-core02-2.0.1-1.i586.rpm openoffice.org-core03-2.0.1-1.i586.rpm openoffice.org-core03u-2.0.1-1.i586.rpm openoffice.org-core04-2.0.1...

install problem
I shot myself in the foot today. I had a centos 5.11 install running fine. Doing a backup, I overwrote the /bin directory by mistake. I couldn't get my machine to recognize a centos 6.5 or 6.6 install dvd, so I put in the original centos 5.10 install disc and re-installed. No problem. During the text installer, I told it to install grub on /dev/sdc1, which is /boot. My raid arrays with lots

Yum, duplicate packages, 4.3->4.4 upgrade.
Hi, I am running a CentOS 4.3 machine. I wish to move on to 4.4. My problem is that I have some 60 duplicate packages listed below. The kernel and gpg-pubkey packages are different versions of the same (none for the gpg) architecture. All the rest are a x86_64 and i[356]86 pairs. 1. Is this a problem? 2. If yes, what should I do? a) remove the duplicates (the i[356]86) and then 4.3 ->
