UseR! 2010 - my impressions
...rrific! I really mean "everything" - the tutorials, invited talks, kaleidoscope sessions, focus sessions, breakfast, snacks, lunch, conference dinner, shuttle services, and the participants. The organization was fabulous. NIST were gracious hosts, and provided top notch facilities. The rousing speech by Antonio Possolo, who is the chief of Statistical Engineering Division at NIST, set the tempo for the entire conference. Excellent invited lectures by Luke Tierney, Frank Harrell, Mark Handcock, Diethelm Wurtz, Uwe Ligges, and Fritz Leisch. All the sessions that I attended had many inter...

Domain DFS on samba 4
Hello, Our company currently stores its data on centralized samba servers which causes performance problems for remote office employees. We are thinking of decentralizing the data with NAS in each office and synchronizing all the NAS on our central domain controller with MSDFS. I have heard this can be done in real time with Windows and Active Directory.

Suspicious activity on domain
Hello, Last week I have detected with Zabbix that a member of my Samba domain had been downloading at a rate of around 8 Mbps for two days and a half. When asking the person to whom belonged the machine, he didn't know he was downloading anything but he said he had observed his machine had slowed down since then. I took a tcpdump of the traffic before terminating his session on Windows

TS licensing problem on samba domain
Hello, We have recently joined a Windows Server 2008 R1 on our samba domain as a domain member. The samba domain controller runs Samba version 3.4.9 on FreeBSD 8.2. We use the Windows Server as a terminal server for our domain users who need an accounting application called Acomba. Therefore we have added TS User CALs to the server in question. The TS Licensing Server was activated and the

Groups with Samba domain controler or domain member
Does anybody know more about groups? I am considering switching from NT to Samba domain and have made some test. Unfortunately I need to make two additional groups, except Domain Admin (one of them is Domain Users). Is it possible to make that with the stable version of Samba? And another, but not so important (for now) question. Currently I have a Samba server, providing files and printers

question about routing, firewall, natd and bridge
Hallo there, I had to change the provider. And after that my public IP adress are routed straight through FreeBSD Box. What is it best way to do it? I personally done it the way, where exist the localnet alias for every interface... eg.. ifconfig_ed0="inet 62.168.40.188 netmask 255.255.255.252 broadcast 62.168.40.191" after that there is local interface 192.168.1.1/255 and it's

Throughput problem with Samba 3.3.4 over VPN
Hi, I am currently in the process of improving performance for a Samba 3.3.4 server on FreeBSD 7.0. The samba server works great when mounted from another machine located on the same network but when I try to use it over our corporate VPN (OpenVPN with tap interface) the throughput won't go over 4,5 Mbps. The ping between the samba client and the server is around 20ms. I have used a linux

Dtrace locks up on sol
Hi all... I''ve just got my hands on a Solaris 10 box for the first time. I''ve heard wonderous things about dtrace, so the first command I type is dtrace -l which disappointingly does nothing at all. It just hangs, and neither Ctrl-D, Ctrl-C or kill -9 from another shell will do anything to kill it. The box is: SunOS t2000 5.10 Generic_118822-25 sun4v sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-T200

How Samba let us down
Before you read this, I want to state (for reasons listed below) that I don't expect an answer (advice is welcomed, but please read this email carefully before answering). I'm sharing this with the community with the hope that better software results from our sad experience... BACKGROUND I've been using NT for 4 years, Netware and Linux for 3 years, and Samba for almost 2. I work

Authentication Problems Accessing Samba Shares
I've been struggling with this for about a week now, so let me ask this question first. Can you use a Server 2003 Active Directory to authenticate windows users trying to access a share on the Samba 3 server? Is this possible? Has anyone done this successfully? I need to be able to allow my windows users to use their 2003 AD account info to access shares on the Samba 3 server. Once again
