ices bitrate encoding mode?
I have got ices running with quality -1 (and on my roommates crappy computer speakers it sounds damn near the real thing - better than FM radio anyway)... I'm just wondering if it's posible to configure it with a maximum bitrate, or a nominal bitrate. i.e. to use managed bitrates instead of quality (I know it's a no no, but this is streamin...

X100P check for Dialtone
Is there any way to make the X100P to check for a dialtone before dialing? My roommate is tired of hearing random dialing in his ear when he's on the phone (same circuit as the X100P). I know one solution is to just put in a TDM400P for the house, but I'd rather get away w/o having to do that. Thanks, Jared

halflife & wine
...on a mandrake 7.2 (with a 2.4.1 kernel) with XFree86 4.0.2 on a geforce 256 using nvidia's drivers. These work fine, as I can run quake3 just fine (native linux, not thru wine...) I've already recompiled a couple times...can anyone shed any light on this? I'm in agony now that my roommate's re-addicted to CS and I'm running 100% linux since windows ate my harddrive :( Also somewhat offtopic, but is there any particular reason that nobody's distributing opengl-enabled wine binaries? It takes forever to compile these things...it would seem that it shouldn't be pl...

connection to IPC$ denied due to security descriptor
Hey all, I have a fileserver running Debian Etch and Samba 3.0.24 that I use to serve media and private home directories. I have a couple roommates, and therefore have a couple accounts on the box for those users. I had everything working perfectly until last week when my system drive took a crap. I've reinstalled everything exactly the same (I think?) but now I am having problems with some accounts not being able to connect to the sha...

tc - in an abnormal LAN
Hello, I have been reading the "Linux Advanced Routing & Traffic Control HOWTO" and was hoping you might be able to give me a little help. I am very new to Linux so please be gentle !?! My network is slightly different to the normal. I have a router with 4 ports DSL-D504T. In the house where I live 3 other people have Win-XP machines on the 3 ports of the router. I have the

Equal bandwidth configuration among host with dummynet
Hi all, First of all, I have spent a lot of time reading up on it. Anyway, I live in a shared accomodation with 2 roommates and a landlord and we share a cable internet connection. It is 2Mbit/400Kbit connection. Sometimes when one of us is downloading a song through Kazaa or a new Linux or FreeBSD iso, the bandwidth gets hogged and other users can't get through. I was trying to configure dummynet using Fair Queu...

Power failure diagnosis?
This morning between 07:10 or so and 08:10 I discovered that my PC had shut itself off. I thought it was due to a power failure becuase I never turn it off without a good reason, and it had been running (and playing sounds) until it wasn't. My roommate/landlord tells me that the only anomaly he observed was that our router had lost its internet connection (via a cable modem, which was still running fine), and his computer, a laptop, and clocks all seemed to be running normally. I checked all the logs in /var/log and there's nothing in there...

Hardware solution? (or v.easy software fix instead)
I''m moving to a new place and my new flatmate wants a router because he likes the cleaness of it all in a non geeky way which I can understand. This means it''s going to be hard for me to pursude him to let me run a computer as a router to act as bandwidth cop. But I don''t fancy trying to use ssh, VNC and games while he''s using WindowsUpdate or p2p. So I need

If someone blows it setting on a multi-user workstation, other users with a working setups can't log in. Result: trouble call. synchronization issues...
Now that my encoder doesn't broadcast static anymore... I've run into another problem. Here's what I'm trying to do (tell me if I'm crazy, because there's probably a better way to do this...) My roommate have two separate computers (and two speaker systems) and would like to listen to the same stuff in the room. So, I figure, set up an icecast server, tune our media players to that, and then launch another instance of WinAmp or XMMS to send a stream on through. However, sometimes it can be a...

Fourier / Bandpass filter help?
...s are involved in some periodic activity. So, I think what I want to do is take a subset of the vector produced by the FFT and go from that back to the initial data frame of [timestamp, events], from which I can go back to the source data and pull out the IPs and so forth. How can I do this? My roommate (an aero engineer) has recommended that I look into implementing a bandpass filter but I'm finding the material to be way over my head. I'm at the limits of my expertise (I am not an engineer :) so if anyone just wants to point me at the topics I need to study, that would be fine--altho...

SIP, NAT, and bindaddr
...others with public addresses. I have successfully configured port forwarding and a few minutes ago I was able to successfully call both internal and external (NAT-wise) phones, connected to voice mail, everything working fine... So why am I writing? Because, then the power went out, thanks to a roommate using the microwave and some weak fuses. Now, once everything has been rebooted, none of my SIP clients can connect. Asterisk issues a warning that it can't bind to 0.0.0.0, "Address already in use." Neither reloading nor stopping and restarting help. Nor does setting bindaddr to...

Ugh, Does Interfaces not work?
...long time ago, so I find it hard to beleave it, but I guess samba got the browse list through broadcasts. Any advice that any of you all can give me regarding cleaning up this mess and getting rid of the eight domains being listed and passed around some odd 80 boxes on an ipsec network? BTW, My roommate and some friends have expressed intrest in being able to print to my two printers. This would mean that I would have to open up samba to the outside world. I would most likely use another copy, but how would I keep samba from sharing the browse list with everything else. I guess what I'm lo...

Wedisk: "ActiveX cannot be registered"
...mponents were installed successfully so far, and also operate without any difficulty on my IE 7. Only this one, Wedisk, is causing this strange problem. I already tried registering the .ocx file (Wedisk.ocx) into the system32 folder in Wine C: Drive by myself, but it was all in vain. I borrowed my roommate's laptop (whose system is Windows XP) in order to extract the .ocx file, only to discover that it does not exist or is hidden somewhere. So I could not even find the file to register, let alone whether the manual registration would work. I am currently so much confused and frustrated. I spent...

Dataset on Baltimore home energy costs
...loss? last week of July 1999: Spouse moved in; both adults absent during the work day, setback thermostat used. Interesting question: Is there a discernable difference in the energy costs for heating between a single person and a couple? What's the heating "cost" of adding a spouse or roommate? 18-Dec-2006: Brought home son; spouse and son home during the day, setback thermostat no longer used. Interesting question: What's the "cost" of adding a child? If I could supply any more information that would make this dataset more useful or interesting, please let me know. I'...

FreeBSD 4.9-PRE+ nvidia
Hello all. I have the same problem as described by Dmitry a day ago in a topic similar. I am able to use x11 with base driver "nv" but when I load "nvidia" driver, startx simply crash my machine and reboot after 5 seconds. I have a similar log file as reported by Dmitry even using startx+logverbose option. XF86Config file is similar, except it is not the same nvidia video

free dids on goiax.com
GoIAX, the Asterisk community's free IAX provider, is offering free US dids now. I loaded about 175 dids in and put up a very beta sign in page. Unfortunately I had to restrict the free us/canada outbound calling back down to toll-free only. There was a lot of war dialing and prank calling going on. I'm working on some stuff to hopefully curb that kind of stuff down so I can

XP Pro And Samba
I have a win98 peer to peer network using a Samba server for file sharing. There 6 Machines on the net. I'm adding a XP Pro and cannot see the neighborhood network. I can get out to the Internet. I've made sure the workgroup name is correct and the XP is not set as DHCP. Our router is the DHCP. Is there something different about setting up the user for the XP Pro? I'm creating
