Constraining Predicted Values to be Greater Than 0
...se respond if you have any suggestions. There are some previous postings about constraining the coefficients, but this won't accomplish what I am trying to do. The coefficients can be negative, just as long as the predicted values are positive. Thank you in advance for your time. Westley A. Ritz Analyst 215-641-2243 writz at trchome.com TRC www.trchome.com

nls, restrict parameter values
...posted a question (bellow) a few weeks ago and had a reply (thanks Christian) that partly solves the problem, but I still would like to be able to restrict some of the independent variables in a nls model to be always >0, (is there a way to do it)?? creating a computed column with activerecord for to_xml
...ullname in the console and it will return last_name, first_name. However, I would like to_xml to do this also. This is basically the concept of a computed column. I tried adding to the column hash in Person and many other ideas but nothing works. Can anyone help with this? Thanks very much. Ritz -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

piecewise nls?
I am looking into fitting a so-called double von Bertalanffy function to fish length-at-age data. Attempting to simplify the situation, the model looks like this ... Y ~ f(X; a,b,c) if x < Z Y ~ g(X; a,d,e) if x >= Z where * f and g are non-linear functions (the "traditional" "single" von Bertalanffy growth function), * Y (length) and X (age) are observed variables,

How can I 'predict' from an nls model with a fit specified for separate groups?
Following an example on p 111 in 'Nonlinear Regression with R' by Ritz & Streibig, I have been fitting nls models using square brackets with the grouping variable inside. In their book is this example, in which 'state' is a factor indicating whether a treatment has been used or not: > Puromycin.m1 <- nls(rate ~ Vm[state] * + conc/(K[state] + con...

plot vs curve
Dear list members, is it intentional that: curve(cos, xlim = c(-5, 5)) plot(cos, xlim = c(-5, 5)) produce different plots? Shouldn't the 'xlim' argument in both cases set the 'from' and 'to' argument if they aren't supplied (at least that's what I understood reading the help page for 'curve' and 'plot.function')? Equidistant time spacing of time series data
...:30, 10:30,10:15, 3:12, hence non equidistant) My question is, do I need to worry about the data being non equidistant? If so, how do I modify my series to account for it? Or is it safe to assume data as being equidistant,as it may not have a strong influence on the final forecast?
