Linus "praise" for Xen
http://www.kerneltraffic.org/kernel-traffic/kt20031201_243.html
--- Relevant section ---
Nuno Silva mentioned:
The good people at Cambridge made a (very nice) VMM that exploits
ring0/1/3 to let one machine run various kernels independently (the
kernels need to be ported to the xen arch).
Xen itself executes in ring0 and the "guest" operating systems
execute in ring1. User code runs in ring3, as usual. They have linux
running under xen ;)

how does hypervisor isolates DomU from Dom0
I am not clear with the working of hypervisor xen.
How does an instruction executed by kernel in Ring0 of DomU gets
mapped or executed by hypervisor and then is excuted in Dom0.
Is this thing some where on the wiki page?

Re: vmware inside Xen
Hello, all.
I want to run VMWare on my dom0, for those special occasions when I
need to boot unmodified OSes.
I found some messages from 2005 on this list that explained that it''s
not possible to run VMWare on a xen host. (Example message pasted
below..)
Well, it''s 2007 now.. Is it possible yet? Before you ask, no, I
don''t have hardware support for virtualization.

Can VMWare modules run alongside in XEN kernel?
I would like to have VMware modules running in the XEN kernel, NOT in DOM0 kernel but outside at the hypervisor level, is that possible?
Architecturally, I noticed that xen subbranch does not implement any modules loading. If I were to load the VMware modules directly as an ELF image, will it break any existing architectural feature in XEN?
Thanks :-).

shared memory and event channel
Hi,
For each domUs there is unique shared memory(2-way circular queue) and event-channel(one shared memory and event-channel per domU)
or there is only one shared memory and interdomain event-channel(for every DomU)?
regards:
Amit

[Patch] Allow for more than one recipient_delimiter (a la postfix 2.11)
Hey everyone,
as my previous emails apparently got stuck in a spam filter I'll try this again.
The patches attached here allow for more than one recipient delimiter in the address.
Which is allowed in postfix since version 2.11.
E.g. lhw+postfix at ring0.de would be equal to lhw-postfix at ring0.de if configured that way.
Same as postfix only the first discovered delimiter is taken into account and the priority
is first to last in the list.

Regarding Xen security....
Hi Sir,
I have a question regarding the security of Xen. What are
the security threats in with Intel VT-x.
Thanks,

VMWare vs. Xen, is the conflict by VMware deliberate?
I''ve been trying to virtualize SCO OpenServer 5.0.6 for various reasons,
and found that the Xensource 4.x doesn''t support it, nor does the open
source Xen 3.x in any of the environments I''ve tried. It works on
VMware, but for various reasons I prefer to use Xen on my Dom0. (I like
open source, and the base OS for the commercial reasons is much, much
more recent, and

[PATCH 1/2] remove __init modifier from header declaration
This patch removes the __init modifier from an extern function
declaration in acpi.h.
Besides not being strictly needed, it requires the inclusion of
linux/init.h, which is usually not even included directly, increasing
header mess by a lot.

Which ring the dom0 run at?
I want to set CR0 in a module. It is ok on linux kernel 2.6.18-164_x86_64
(kernel of rhel 5.4). But if the kernel is 2.6.18-164xen_x86_64, the system
reboot when set CR0. I think maybe because the ring of dom0 is not ring0.
Thanks.

Virtualization + CPU w/crypto acceleration instructions
In a virtualized environment running Xen or VMware, can the guest
operating systems utilize hardware crypto acceleration such as the
"PadLock" AES acceleration built into VIA CPUs?
(Wasn't able to find this info in any of ~400 Google hits, so I'm
shooting it out a bit to let as many as possible benefit from the
answer.)
