Tweaking Samba for Perfomance
...arge copies from the server to the client take a very long time to compleet. How can that be? Why is that so slow? Much slower than the same action from a Windows server. I use Redhat 6.0 / Samba 2.0.5a and Win95 as a client. Does anybody knows a good reference for optimizing a Samba Server? Paul Rijke Truckland Amsterdam B.V. Policy Editor and Samba 2.0.6
.../Samba 2.0.6? I'd like to secure as much as possible for my users. The helpfile says something like put a .pol file in the netlogon share... but that didn't work. Or did I something wrong? Well, I don't want to invent the wheel again so I ask all of you... Can it be done and how? Paul Rijke Truckland B.V. authentication failure
Hi, I've just installed Samba 2.0.3 and now I'm getting following error: PAM_pwdb[306]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0) -> andreas for samba service I can connect to all shares and printers, but get the error. I suppose it has something to do with the passwords (I'm trying to sync Samba and Linux passwords). Any ideas? /Andreas

DOCMEMORY 2.0 (simmtester) and MEMDISK
Like a lot of people, I am using SYSLINUX + MEMDISK to make a technician universal boot disk on a USB key (I have done the same with ISOLINUX and MEMDISK for a CD using Bart's method for bootable CDs) I *LOVE* Syslinux and MEMDISK, and what I can do with floppy images! I have a few problems that have cropped up, most notably the DOCMEMORY program (www.simmstester.com) boots fing, but the

Heineken Face EU Fines for Curbing Rivalry
Heineken NV and Carlsberg A/S may be fined after the European Commission charged that they conspired to curb competition in the Dutch and Danish beer markets from 1993 to 1996. The European Union's antitrust regulator said evidence collected in raids two years ago showed the two brewers broke EU law by agreeing not to sell ``intensively'' in each other's territory. The companies

Slightly OT: Anyone got a PXE bootable HDD low level format tool?
Slightly off topic, but does anyone have a utility for low level formating Maxtor ATA hard disks that can be booted from PXELinux (either as some kind of binary or as a floppy image)? I just went to get the official tools, but they only have a floppy creator (which won't help me in Linux, or without a floppy drive) and a CD ISO. And it seems 99% of 3rd party software is unhelpfully the

Non-root users cannot use smbpasswd
I've searched the archives for an answer to this problem, and yet nothing that works seems to have been posted. I've seen it posted many times In my particular case, I'm running Samba 2.0.6 on Solaris 2.5.1, configured with the --with-smbwrapper, --with-automount, and --with-syslog options. I also have samba set up as a PDC, and that seems to be working fine. A stripped down
