[LLVMdev] rematerialization question
I am a bit confused how the rematerialization works.
It seems currently in our backend we get lots of code where some stack
offset address is calculated, but this address is then spilled to stack,
and loaded from stack later.
This does not make sense, it would be better to just recalculate the
address later, ie rematerialize the original stack offset calculation.
But marking some instruction

Extending Register Rematerialization

[LLVMdev] Rematerialization and spilling
I'm working on an out-of-tree target and am having some problems with rematerialization and spilling.
The target's load and store instructions affect the condition code register (CCR). Describing this in the InstrInfo.td file using Defs = [CCR] certainly prevents spills and fills from being inserted where they might clobber CCR but it also prevents the load instruction from being

I should probably voice our point of view as well… Hexagon is another VLIW target with “non standard” demands for bundling.
I think Jacob has summarized current view of bundles as “black box” rather precise, but I should say that our view of bundles is way more fluid and open than that.

instruction bundles. Ideally, I'd like to have bundles *before* RA to

I'd like to force rematerialization by extending live intervals. For
example:
%vreg1 = opa %vreg2, %vreg3 ; RClassA:%vreg1, RClassB:%vreg2, RClassB:%vreg3

somewhere between --> %vreg2<kill> and %vreg3<kill>

Yep, about 5 months ago I had a conversation about this too... it may even
be the one you're referencing. Our remat is really conservative - it only
rematerializes values that have zero input operand...

That should be literally impossible, which makes me think something
was tested wrong
The second patch i posted disables scalar pre (assuming you use
-disable-pre) but not load pre.
Since the patch you reverted touched only scalar pre, disabling scalar
pre should *also* do the same thing.

thanks for the advice. I'll do as you suggest and make sure that CCR is never live.
I can use pseudo-instructions to bundle cmp+jump but it's not ideal because I might also have to bundle cmp+jump+jump+... into a pseudo. Also, there are several flavours of cmp instruction so I might need a lot of pseudos.

That may not be necessary. The register allocator won’t insert anything between terminators.
