Hello $LIST,
i setup a new clean domain to examine the feature of updating/creating PTR records. When i call ipconfig /registerdns on the client i get this entry in the windows eventlog (sorry german)

Dynamic DNS Updates
Having reconfigured Samba4 to use BIND as a DNS server to get dynamic DNS
updates working, I'm still working to understand the system.
The Windows client I'm testing only seems up update DNS if I run ipconfig
/registerdns. It doesn't update DNS at startup or IP change OOTB. Is it
expected that Windows clients run a startup script running ipconfig
/registerdns or have dynamic updates enforced in Group Policy?
Additionally, timestamps against dynamically updated DNS A records always
read as today's date 12:00...

Samba 4 ADDC. Dynamic DNS updates from Windows clients.
...The router is
configured to hand out the DNS server details of the ADDC.
I have joined a windows 8 virtual machine to the domain, it gets an IP
address from the router, but internal DNS running on the ADDC doesn't seem
to add an A record for my windows client.
I've tried running ipconfig /registerdns on the win client but get an
unable to update DNS error.
I'm sure I'm missing something here. Can anybody help?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Signed Dynamic DNS Updates with Internal DNS [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]
...a new standalone Windows network (https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Samba4/HOWTO#Samba_AD_management).
Everything appears to be working correctly except for signed dynamic updates.
Non-secure updates work fine. A, AAAA and PTR records are added to DNS when a PC joins the domain or I issue ipconfig /registerdns.
Using wireshark, I see the following when I issue "ipconfig /registerdns" (samba configured for signed updates):
An unsigned dynamic update request is rejected.
An apparently successful Tkey handshake occurs.
The client fails to request a signed dynamic update.
I interpret this as the...

DNS Registration
...ew Samba 3.0.14a servers nicely running with ADS security and
winbind on Debian Sarge. The one problem I seem to have is their DNS
registration with our WIN2K3 name servers that I have no access to. I
see that most WIN2K/XP/03 register automatically (DDNS) or manually with
the command ipconfig /registerdns. I can probably ask for records to be
manually entered but I thought I would ask this list if there is
something I can do or am missing to get them registered like the
WIN2K/XP/03 machines register themselves.
Thanks,
Mike

Administrator account lost administrative privileges
...noticed the Administrator account could not
install software. The Domain Admins appear to work as normal with full
domain rights. As a test I logged in to a Windows 10 workstation as
Administrator and invoked a command prompt with 'Run as Administrator'.
Attempted to run 'ipconfig /registerdns' I get the prompt about needing
to run with administrative privileges.
Not entirely sure where to start to see if this is a Samba or Windows
issue. Anyone have a list of what group memberships the Administrator
should be a part of by default? Thanks.

W2k client with AD can't access linux-Samba 2.2.1a
...ese RRs was because the
update request that was sent to the specified DNS server timed out. This is
probably because the authoritative DNS server for the name being registered
is
not running.
You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its
settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If
problems
still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. For
specific error code information, see the record data displayed below.

Dynamic DNS updates (Samba 4.8.2 & Bind 9.10)
...rmation trying to
figure this out on my own, but I finally must ask.
I am unable to get any machines to _naturally_ register. I can force
register with samba-tool and I can create new records with the DNS mmdc
tool. But as far as a new windows workstation auto-registering, or forcing
via ipconfig /registerdns - that never works. But first my configs, then my
logs:

netbios name = lighthouse
realm = DOMAIN.TLD
server role = active directory domain controller
server services = s3fs, rpc, nbt, wrepl,...

after DCs migration to 4.7, two things
...and noticed that the current
workstation dns records are listed with timestamp 'static'. As I come
from samba 4.5 with internal dns, perhaps this is the way samba adds them..?
So I removed both A/AAAA for the p002507 dns entry, and ran on the
windows p002507 workstation: "ipconfig /registerdns"
suddenly it worked: A new dns record appeared, now with timestamp
"7-11-2017 20:00:00", both A and AAAA records. And they are renewed
every hour, I noticed.
As I don't think we require dns of our domain clients, I am now thinking
to simply delete all regular workstation &quo...

Please Help! Dynamic DNS just will not work: " failed gss_inquire_cred: GSSAPI error: Major = Unspecified GSS failure"
I just can't seem to get dynamic DNS updates working on CentOS 6.4 with
samba 4.0 .tar.gz from samba.org using BIND9_DLZ.
If I run bind 9.8.2.rc1 in debug mode and go to a domain joined windows
client and run 'ipconfig /registerdns' this is what I get in my console:

Win Clients and DNS
...omething is wrong. Are you using secure
or non-secure updates? Even though you are using static IP's, you will
find these entries if one of the following was to happen and dns updates
failed.
* A IP address was added or removed from the TCP/IP properties in Windows
* Enforcing ipconfig /registerdns from a elevated command prompt
* At startup
Based on what you have said. It appears all A records belonging to the
workstations are registered in DNS?
