Slow writes continued
I posted a while back about getting very slow writes. People suggested
modifying (increasing) SO_SNDBUF and SO_RCVBUF and this actually helps
enormously. However, there is obviously something still not right. Writes
are still about 1/2 the speed of reads. This only seems to affect Win95
clients (NT machines are fine). Doing a write of a 20mb file to the server
generates the following message:
chdir to /int-data/...

The problem is this, although samba is bound to eth1's ip address, if i
try to sonnect to samba using eth0, it fails, but if in unplug the cable
in the eth0 card the transfers over samba die. looking at iptraf it
seems all traffic is being routed over the first card, nothing is going...

File xfer speed issues with MacOS X 10.2 and 10.3
Hi all,
I have a mixed environment of Windows 2000, XP, Linux, and MacOS X clients
connecting to various Samba servers. Our network is 100Mbit switched ethernet.
Originally, we were using samba 2.2.8a, with the socket options of TCP_NODELAY
SO_SNDBUF=4096 SO_RCVBUF=4096. However, the MacOS X clients (which were added
after the initial setup and testing), had horrible file xfer performance;
somewhere around 100kbit/second, while the Windows clients were much faster.
The first response was to upgrade to samba 3.0.0, which didn't affect the
problem one way...

Controlling SO_RCVBUF
...transfers over a long haul connection. The current transfer rate is limited by the TCP window size and the RTT. I looked at HPN-SSH, but that won't work because we don't control what software the peer is using. I was thinking about coding a much more modest enhancement that just does SO_RCVBUF for specific subsystems. In the interest of adding something that the OpenSSH community would take back into the source base, what do people think is a better fit in the configuration file?
A single keyword for specifying connection options:
SubsystemOptions <subsystem-name> [command-line-...

Daniel & Francesco, this should address the performance problem you
tried to address with ("tcp: rcvbuf autotuning improvements")

SMB slow by design?
Hello list,
I have observed quite low bandwidth usage when copying files over SMB.
This happens for at least three cases I have tested:
* Windows 98 SE reading from a Samba 3.0.22 smbd
* Windows XP reading from a Samba 3.0.23d
* smbclient reading from 127.0.0.1 (3.0.23d)
According to iptraf, the average transfer rate was oscillating between
8604.60 kbps and 8654.20 kbit/s, copying a

What is Samba speed?
...ughoutput about 3-4
MBytes/s reading from Samba, 2-3 MB/s writing to Samba server. (IDE discs,
but 256 MB memory, Athlon 900 MHz, one 500 MB file, 100 Mbit network).
What are your results? Does anybody knows about some performance tunings? I
have adjusted only this:
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=16384 SO_SNDBUF=16384
write cache size = 262144
Thanks,
Libor
