Asterisk and VOIP was Re: CentOS for non-tech user
-----Original Message----- From: Brian Mathis The difference is that CentOS is a general-purpose OS that can be used for many things, and has a much bigger installed base. That makes it more of a target and would likely be included in scanning tools. A custom OS running on a PBX might also have vulnerabilities, but it's also probably not a big target because of the diversity of systems

Newby- New install forgot Login - pwd
Hi, I have just spent a whole day installing Centos 5.3 on an old machine and now as I take disc 4 out and reboot, I get the first black screen with Login and Password. I can remember being asked for one Login and pwd early in the install but chose not to use one, then it asked what the box is going to be called and I said Linux... (I think). How in earth can I get myself out of this??

libgio?
Hi, I'm trying to run Celtx (a screenplay formatter) in CentOS 5.3 from the shell. If I run celtx-bin I get the following error: ./celtx-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libjemalloc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory If I run celtx I get ./celtx-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgio-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or

Flash Drive problem?
I've been having an odd problem lately. When I drag files from the computer to a flash drive, they appear to copy, but when I try to use the files I find that only the name was copied (file size of 0). When I copy the same files to the same flash drive, from the terminal, everything seems to work. Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? It's starting to get a little frustrating.

Went with OpenDNS for now
A few weeks ago I asked about firewalls and family filters. Lanny Marcus, I believe, suggested OpenDNS. Just wanted to thank him (and everyone here) for their suggestions. Eventually I would like to learn about firewalls, but I don't really want to run another machine at this time. OpenDNS is trivial to set up on the router and looks to be just about exactly what I wanted. Thanks. Sorry to

A couple questions about Wine
VirtualBox works great but, since I only really use one Windows program (an older, specialized word processor called Movie Magic Screenwriter), I'm thinking of using Wine to run it in CentOS and getting rid of the Windows virtual machine. But a couple questions: 1) If I run Wine, do I introduce security or performance issues? 2) Is there any difference between Michael Harris' Wine

A bit more on the Firefox 3.5.issue
I set up a CentOS desktop computer for my brother and his kids. When Firefox 3.5 came out he decided to download and install it like he would Windows (he doesn't yet understand the repository system). He's been telling me that it works fine, even though I was skeptical due to my experience with Firefox 3.5 on CentOS 5.3. Then today, he says, "Oh, by the way, the CentOS computer has

When should LVM be used?
In my old computer I have a much bigger hard drive then in this one -- and I plan to hand that old computer down to one of my sons -- keeping his current drive from an even older computer. Currently the hard drive on my old computer has SuSE Linux, but that will go. I'll rebuild CentOS 5.5 on it, but I want to leave some free space for whatever comes up and also dual-boot Vector Linux. Which,

CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway
Hi Everyone, I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server (though

[OT] Godaddy hell...
Can I get some recommendations: We are looking for a hosting provider (other than godaddy) with 1: SLA 2: SSH access 3: subversion/rsync or the ability to install binaries / compile source. Would like them to include http/https and email. Any suggestions? -Jason -- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -

Update Issue
I come to you "hat in hand" again. For the first time in a long while I got a "Update Notification" at the bottom of my screen -- so I decided to click on it and run the update. Unfortunately I got a couple dependency errors and am not sure how to solve them. (Not even sure why I got them.) They are as follows: Missing Dependency: libavcodec.so.51 is needed by package

Caught between a Red Hat and a CentOS
Interesting column at CNET... http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10376762-16.html ~~ "Novell has been positioning itself as the Avis of Linux, a distant but gaining Red Hat competitor that "tries harder." Like Oracle, Novell argues that it can give customers Red Hat value at a lower price. "There's just one problem with this marketing spin: the "low-cost

Thanks! Desktop update successful
Just used 'yum clean all' and 'yum update.' So far no problems at all. I had to double check to make sure that I actually updated -- no new wallpaper or splash screen this time. Thanks everyone. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.4

Xorg without xorg.conf (a bit OT)
I like to try out other distributions of Linux. Today I took a look at Mint Linux 8 and Fedora 12. I installed and updated each on a small partition -- actual physical install, not virtual machines. Both worked great at 1280x1024 (their defaults) but neither would let me use 1024x768 resolution. Both came with newer versions of Xorg, neither of which build an xorg.conf file. Mint gave me three

Wireless Made Easy (for Home Desktops)
For those of you who use a wireless router and may work on one or two (or even several) machines in your computer room, an AP Client is a nice solution. When you move to another machine you can just move the wireless net adapter to the new machine and you're up and running on the network immediately. I've been using a D-Link G730AP for a while -- but it's not really made for this --

Flash problems in newest upgrade?
Hi, I just upgraded to the newest kernel and Flash. Hulu now "grays out" when I try to go to full screen. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the proprietary video drivers (no difference either way), so I'm guessing it has something to do with either the new Flash or the new kernel. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Thanks for any pointers. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.5

Grub upgrade for CentOS 5.5?
Stupid question (I'm guessing). I'm currently tri-booting (or would like to be) VectorLinux 6 Deluxe, CentOS 5.5 and an evaluation copy of Red Hat 6. I'm using CentOS's grub. VectorLinux and CentOS boot fine, but Red Hat won't load. I think I read somewhere that CentOS's grub is too old for ext3, 256 (something or others). So, is it possible to download and install a newer
