the sample() function
hello R-Wizards!!!!! again i'm invoking your presence!!
since all the fuss about the paradoxes on a computer algorithm generating
"caos" or un-determinancy, i recently grew quite curious about the mechanism
underlying the procedure of NUMBER RADOMIZATION.
could anyone of you, masters, attach me the algorithm (or source code? is it
right?) behind the *sample()* function, so i can

windowing strategies
Hello to everybody,
Does anyone has implemented a function for evaluating models using windowing
strategies, such as growing window or sliding window ones?
The aim is to evaluate regression models on a time series data. I do not use
cross-validation once data sorted in a radom way does not make sense when
evaluating time series.
Thanks

AGI global style variables
I have had some radom occurances of someone calling in, and for whatever
reason the person is getting dumped into the section of the lcr.agi file
that output the message of "it is necessary to dial x". I was curious,
does any one know about a variable that might be available in the AGI that
would tell me what channel they are coming in on.
I looked in the wiki and found

SATA
Has anyone had any problems with SATA, either on board or 3rd party setup? I've currently got a problem where an AMD non SATA FC2 system is working fine but an Intel system with a 3Ware SATA card and FC3 is radomly not syncing with the ISDN30. It allows and receives calls but at random intervals drops them.

Hi all,
I was just radomly playing with R and got the following error when
trying to filter a data frame using a string:

> DrHorrible <- c(10,9,9,10,10)

Extremely slow during browsing some directories
hi,
I am quite new on using Samba and sorry maybe ask a silly question here. I
set up simple Samba server on Fedora3 using the samba rpm package comes with
fedora3( version 3.0.10-1.fc3). I use the SHARE security level to make
things easier. Everything goes fine so far, except that for some windows
user, some times, on browsing some directories, it takes extremely long time
to display the

restricted bootstrap
Hello List,
I am not sure that I have the correct terminology here (restricted
bootstrap) which may be hampering my archive searches. I have quite a large
spatially autocorrelated data set. I have xy coordinates and the
corresponding pairwise distance matrix (metres) for each row. I would like
to randomly sample some number of rows but restricting samples such that the
distance between them is

How to best start from scratch implementing a ERM diagram?
Hey people,
I''m starting a new project and just finished creating the ERM diagram
with about 30 tables. There are quite some tables with foreign keys so
I''m not sure how to start creating the controllers/models.
How should I start creating controllers/models? Should I first create
all tables without foreign key? Should I just start somewhere and add
them radomly?
I''m

Steam Apps freezing
I'm using wine to run Steam based games like Counterstrike and Day of
Defeat. This generally works well but from time to time the games radomly
freeze(about every hour or so).
To get further information I made an error.log(see below) and googled the
error. I found quite some information but no way to solve the problem.
Any ideas, assumptions...?

Red X and guest user message in logs
Hello,
I have a Debian Sarge machine running Samba 3.0.14a as PDC and file server.
Everything runs smoothly, except for a random problem: users (on
Win2000Pro clients) are often seeing a red cross on the main network
share, as if it was disconnected. This red X seems to come and go at random.
The red cross would not be a big issue itself, but it has an annoying
consequence: when it appears,

"Unable to find path from G729A to ULAW" on Sipphone.com
I seem to be having a problem with transcoding and/or agreeing on a
valid codec. I am running a new image pulled from CVS at 1:30 PM CST.
The issue occurs when I try to make a call to a toll-free number over
sipphone.com.
Here's what I see in the console:

asterisk and iptables
Hi,
I have a problem with asterisks on Linux.
Looks like it is a iptables problem. My external client (eyebeam, on a
different computer) cannot register to the asterisk server, but the
asterisk server itself *looks* working.
If I dial one of the incoming phone numbers for the server, I can see
the call arriving in Asterisk (using asterisk -r).
I tried nmap on my server, and this is the result:

potential wiki on encryption
Hello all,
I posted the whole disk encryption instructions in the forum that has been briefly discussed on the list. I joined the list per Ned's post on the thread.

I have a couple of questions about the process of creating a wiki.
1. How does the peer-review process work?
2. Is there a place

Encrypting tmp swap and home
Hi everyone,
I added a page under the HowTos for Encryption, and then added a guide
for encrypting /tmp /swap and /home using cryptsetup and LUKS keys on
LVM, when you already have partitions setup.

Centos 5.3 -> Apache - Under Attack ? Oh hell....
Guys, apache cpus usage is hitting 100% sometimes ( to such an extent that its very noticeable) on a box with just 8 users or so.
i m getting this when i run 'top'. The worrying thing is seeing the work 'atack' under command
