MTBF of Ext3 and Partition Size
Hi All, On several of my servers I seem to have a high rate of server crashes do to file system errors. So I have some questions related to this: Is there any Mean Time Between Failure ( MTBF) data for the ext3 file-system? Does increased partition size cause a higher risk of the partition being corrupted? If so, is there any data on the ratio between partition size and the likely hood of

Varying texts in expression(paste())
Hi, I am using R a lot to make plots relating to radioactivity, I am often using expression() to label the plots with nuclide names written with superscripts, e.g. expression(paste("Releases of ", { }^{99},Tc," (TBq/year)"))->ywtext But, is there any simple way to change the number and name of the nuclide through a variable? I tri...

Multiple Logins - Single Mail Account
I have a mail account which needs to be accessed by 4-5 people simultaneously through IMAP. As of now I have configured it on the respective clients using the same username and password so we have multiple people accessing the same account through their mail clients simultaneously and it is working flawlessly. Is this alright or can it lead to some problems or corruption of data later ? What is

Please help me interpret these results (fitting distributions to real data)
I just thought of a useful metaphore for the problem I face. I am dealing with a problem in business finance, with two kinds of related events. However, imagine you have a known amount of carbon (so many kilograms), but you do not know what fraction is C14 (and thus radioactive). Only the C14 will give decay events (and once that event has occurred, the atom that decayed will never decay again). C12 will never decay. What you want to know is a) what is the ratio of C12 to C14 at time 0, and b) how many decay events will happen between time X and time y, or how many...

Motherboard for home zfs/solaris file server
Hello, I am building a home file server and am looking for an ATX mother board that will be supported well with OpenSolaris (onboard SATA controller, network, graphics if any, audio, etc). I decided to go for Intel based boards (socket LGA 775) since it seems like power management is better supported with Intel processors and power efficiency is an important factor. After reading several

predict.coxph
Since I read the list in digest form (and was out ill yesterday) I'm late to the discussion. There are 3 steps for predicting survival, using a Cox model: 1. Fit the data fit <- coxph(Surv(time, status) ~ age + ph.ecog, data=lung) The biggest question to answer here is what covariates you wish to base the prediction on. There is the usual tradeoff between too few (leave out something
