Runaway rpm process?
...ts as a warm
spare for another kvm instance running on a different physical host.
Each hour it backs up the live system using rsync. This morning I
discovered that the backup instance was running at 99% utilisation and
that the process consuming the entire virtual cpu was this:
sh -c rpm -q -a --queryformat
"%{NAME}\n%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE}\n%{EPOCH}\n%{GROUP}\n%{SUMMARY}\n\n"
2>/dev/null
In fact there were two identical instances of these processes, one the
parent of the other.
The vm instance does not have access to the internet as its physical
host is connected to the physical host of...

So, replying to my own post here, as build order is only part of the
story.? Determining the contents of what was in the actual BUILDROOT at
%{BUILDTIME} can be right difficult, since the BUILDROOT is not

how to install standard software on systems with heterogeneous hardware?
I've been thinking about ways to proceed if I need to set up 5
machines with basically identical software but somewhat variable
hardware. A simple approach would be to just set up my golden system
and clone the disk, but the hardware differences would probably cause
problems.
One approach that appeals to me is to install minimal centos on the
first system, add a few rpms after installation,

I would like to get a custom kickstart file created for our system. For

Can anyone tell me if this can be done? If it can, please give me
instructions?

ffmpeg
This is annoying. I've been trying to get motion working correctly on
CentOS 6. First, there was no ffmpeg rpms. Now, I try to install it, and
it's found on rpmfusion... except that it will not install. It insists
that libfaad.so.0 is required, and tells me faad2-libs-2.6.1-5 from el5 is
available. (I've done some stuff with my repos to try to get what I need
for motion.)

freenx
Hello,
I am having problems getting freenx running in CentOS 4.5 i386_64. I
know this is not a new problem, however, I havn't
found a solution in all the postings I found on the web.
I did exactly what is supposed to work and described in detail at
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/FreeNX
After doing that I can connect to the server with nxcleint without
problem but I get only a black

bug: comps has wrong version number
hi,
comps in rh9 is comps-9-0.20030313 while in the latest centos-3.4 it's
comps-3.4centos.0-0.20050105 so the rh9 has higher version number which
means this packages not upgraded during an upgrade to any version of
centos. and yum also not upgrade this package. imho it's a bug.
is there any way to find out what other packages is remain from some
older rh version?
yours.

Migration
Hello all!
I'm new to the list. I just upgraded 3 White Box Linux servers (database, application and internet) yesterday to Centos 3.4 using the info in
http://centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=19.
Very easy, and that was a very helpfull document!
The decision was based in the speed of updates, really much faster in Centos! Is there a similar way to upgrade a Fedora Core 1 server

sed (or other) magic to get RPM base names ?
Hey folks,
Once upon a time I saw some sed magic to take the output of "rpm -qa"
and strip away all the version info to give just the RPM base names.
And of course I forgot to note it :-/ And have not been able to
replicate it myself.
e.g. from this :
avahi-0.6.16-1.el5
avahi-glib-0.6.16-1.el5
produce this :
avahi
avahi-glib
thanks,

i386 packages on fresh x86_64 system
Even a minimal install with nobase installs about 40-50 i386 packages on a
64bit-System. I know this has come up before and thought it might be an
FAQ, but I can't find it on the wiki.
Some questions are answered here:
http://www.goitworld.com/rhelcentos-x86_64-and-i386-packages-mess/
but I have these remaining:
- can I tell via kickstart to just install the 64bit packages?
- is it safe to

where is xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-1.EL.13.37.7.i386?
Hi all,
I don't see xorg-x11-libs-6.8.2-1.EL.13.37.7.i386.rpm in the CentOS4
x86_64 updates repo. It is listed in the security announcement:
http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-announce/2007-April/013658.html
I see the 4 other i386 packages there: devel, deprecated-libs,
Mesa-libGL, and Mesa-libGLU. Just the libs package is missing.

Authoring a HOWTO
I am in the process of authoring a Samba-LDAP-PDC HOWTO for Mandrake
users that will allow cross platform ( Linux / M$ ) network user
authentication. Lastnight I ran
rpm --rebuild --with ldap samba-2.2.7a-2mdk.src.rpm
and it produced a list of packages that I needed to install in order to
compile this version of samba. I did so but I neglected to write down
the list. I did the install of
